Then the line went dead.
Fairfax’s world fell silent, but his heart felt like it had been twisted into a knot. He didn't know what was happening at the Yelchin estate, but he knew it was something terrible.
Her question echoed in his mind: How many people has your mother killed? What did that mean? Could his mother... have actually killed someone?
No, it was impossible. Darleen had a temper and loved to show off in her high-society circles, but she wasn't a murderer. What was Starla trying to imply?
His thoughts were a chaotic mess.
From the driver's seat, Gabriel glanced at him in the rearview mirror. "Sir, is she still refusing the divorce?"
The question weighed heavily on Fairfax. He found himself filled with regret. If only he had agreed to the divorce when Starla first asked, none of this would be happening.
But regret was useless now. No matter what settlement he offered, she refused to let go.
Fairfax pinched the bridge of his nose, his head throbbing. Starla's words haunted him, especially the chilling silence from Darleen after she'd been asked about murder.
"What's the status of those investigations?" Fairfax asked, referring to the connection between Felix Fowler and Brinley.
"The Fowler family is being cautious, so we're still looking into Felix and Brinley's communications," Gabriel reported.
"And her depression?"
