I should be working and yet I can’t stop thinking about Sadie.

The taste of her lips. The way her tears slid hot against my fingers. The storm of emotions she tried so hard to hide, only for me to glimpse the raw truth beneath.

Fuck! Why did it take me this long to realize how beautiful she is? How come I never saw her for what she is? Kind, courageous, and wonderful.

Every day in my bed, right before I go to sleep, I beat myself up for being so blind. For not noticing her sooner. I’ve known her since she was a little girl; I had her chasing me for years yet not once did I ever notice how wonderful she is. She’s perfect; I just wish I’d seen that earlier.

I lean back in my office chair, but I’m useless tonight. No amount of paperwork is enough to distract me. Knox is pacing inside me, restless, but not with agitation; he’s happy. Content in a way I haven’t felt from him in years.

“She kissed us,” he rumbles with satisfaction. “She’s letting us in. She’s finally ours.”

I don’t think we’ve ever been this content or happy in a long time. I’m a feared alpha. I’ve won countless wars. Won countless awards in the business world. I’ve conquered so many packs and taken so many pack lands… But none of those achievements could compare to the progress we’ve made with Sadie.

“We still have a long way to go,” I tell him, my mind on ideas to make her fully accept us.

“I know,” he says, “But at least this is something… before she wouldn’t even allow us near her.”

A knock at the door cuts me off before I can reply. I don’t need to ask who it is; her scent is already curling into the room, warm and familiar, wrapping around me like a tether.

Goddess, I could drown in her scent. It hypnotizing, drawing me in like a moth to a flame.
