Alpha alec's redemption (Sadie) novel Chapter 339

So, I stand there on the podium, swallowing every instinct I have, pretending I’m composed. Pretending this isn’t breaking me.

I finish my speech and step down from the podium. The moment I do, I’m flooded.

Alphas from neighboring packs. A vampire duke with too many rings and too little patience. A witch matriarch who compliments the décor then proceeds to insult it… I respond mechanically, nodding at the right moments, shaking hands, and accepting greetings, but my eyes? My eyes never leave Sadie.

She drifts further into the crowd, swallowed by people greeting her, asking who she is, and complimenting her dress. She smiles politely and speaks when spoken to, but there’s a shield around her. An emotional wall that didn’t exist a few days ago.

Knox whines low. “I need my mate. We have to talk to her. This is the perfect chance; she won’t be able to escape us.”

I hear him, but before I can excuse myself and go to her, I realize she’s gone.

I scan the room, but I don’t find her. Panic then begins to tighten my chest. I excuse myself from the group, barely waiting for a response.

Her scent lingers, but it’s faint and I’m having a hard time locking it down with so many people around. I follow it, dodging those that want to talk to me. My sole focus is finding her. Her scent leads me across the room, past the orchestra, past the open bar, and out onto the balcony.

Then I hear laughter. Her laughter. Except it’s not the soft, shy one I’ve grown to love. It’s one I’ve never heard before. Sultry, seductive and completely dangerous.

I step out onto the balcony and freeze. Sadie is standing there with a vampire beside her. Tall, dark hair, sharp cheekbones, a face that’s too pretty and a smirk that makes me want to break his jaw.

I know the vampire. It’s Cassius… An aristocrat among vampires.

He’s standing too close while she’s leaning back against the railing and his hand is on her waist.

My vision pulses red.

I step forward, voice rough. “Sadie.”

She doesn’t flinch. She doesn’t even look guilty. She just tilts her head toward me, bored. “Yes, Alpha Alec?”

Cassius smirks like he knows exactly what he’s doing.

“What are you doing?” I grind out.
