(Audrey’s POV)
Hearing this, I was a little surprised. Arthur Moonstone, the Alpha who had refused to let me go for so long, was now offering to proceed with the mate bond severance without conditions—and then giving me time to reconsider his request afterward?
I stared at the phone in my hand, certain there must be some catch. This wasn’t the Arthur I knew-the possessive, domineering Alpha who had once locked me in a room to prevent me from looking for Florian.
“Daniel, is this some kind of joke?” I finally asked.
“Not at all, Luna Winter,” he replied, his tone perfectly professional. “Alpha Moonstone has authorized me to arrange the severance at your earliest convenience.”
An opportunity too good to pass up. Whatever game Arthur was playing, I needed to seize this chance before he changed his mind.
“I’m available tomorrow,” I said quickly, my heart racing at the thought of finally being free. “Would Alpha Moonstone be free in the afternoon?”
“I’ll check his schedule and confirm,” Daniel promised. “Will two o’clock at the Pack Council office be acceptable?”
“Yes, perfect.” I gripped the phone tighter. “Please let Alpha Moonstone know I’ll be there.”
After hanging up, I sat motionless, overwhelmed by the possibility that tomorrow, after years of struggle, I might finally be free of the mate bond that had become my cage.
(Arthur’s POV)
I sensed Daniel before he entered my office. The slight hesitation in his footsteps, the way he cleared his throat-he was nervous, which meant he had news about Audrey.
“Enter,” I called, not looking up from the territory expansion documents spread across my desk.
Daniel approached cautiously, stopping a respectful distance from my desk. “Alpha, I’ve relayed your message to Luna Winter.
Now I did look up, studying my Beta’s face for clues. “And?”
“She’s agreed to proceed with the mate bond severance,” Daniel reported, his voice carefully neutral despite the tension in his shoulders. “She’s asked if tomorrow at two o’clock at the Pack Council office would be convenient for you.”
I felt a strange hollowness expand in my chest. So she hadn’t hesitated at all-hadn’t even needed to consider the offer before accepting.
“Tomorrow at two,” I repeated, my voice betraying nothing of the turmoil beneath. “That’s fine.”
Daniel shifted his weight, clearly uncomfortable. “Alpha, if I may ask… are you certain about this decision?”
I leaned back in my chair, a hint of self-mockery twisting my lips. “Arrange it, Daniel. Two o’clock.”
“Yes, Alpha,” he nodded and quickly left the office.
Alone, I rose and walked to the window, staring out at the Moonstone Pack territory that stretched before me. Everything I’d ever wanted-power, respect, control-lay at my fingertips. Everything except her.
I recalled seeing her at the territory hotel with Luna Riverwind, how visceral my reaction had been. My wolf had nearly howled with possessive need, demanding I reclaim what was mine. For two years, I’d held onto our mate bond like a lifeline, refusing to acknowledge it was already broken in every way that mattered.
But something had changed in me since she disappeared. Perhaps it was the endless searching, the desperate hope each time we thought we’d found a trace of her. Or maybe it was the crushing realization, when she did return, that she looked at me with nothing but cold disdain.
“Why should I keep forcing her?” I murmured to the empty room.
Her words from our past confrontations echoed in my mind: “You never respected me enough to communicate,” “You made decisions for both of us without consulting me,” “You treated me like a possession, not a partner.”
She’d been right. And two years of reflection had shown me that my approach had only driven her further away.
If I truly wanted her back-not just physically present but willingly by my side-I needed to become an Alpha worthy of her respect. Even if that meant letting her go, letting her choose her own path.
Even if that path led to Florian Stormhowl.
(Audrey’s POV)
I arrived at the Pack Council office fifteen minutes early, my nerves wound tight. To my surprise, Arthur was already there, seated on a bench in the waiting area, his posture perfectly straight and dignified.
He was dressed in the formal pack attire I had chosen for him three years ago-dark, perfectly tailored, with the Moonstone Pack emblem elegantly embroidered at the collar. Despite everything, I couldn’t deny how striking he looked-every inch the powerful Alpha wolf.
As I approached, he rose smoothly to his feet. His dark eyes met mine directly, revealing nothing of his inner thoughts.
“You’re early,” I commented, trying to sound casual despite my racing heart.
“So are you,” he replied, his voice neutral. He gestured toward the office door. “Let’s go.”
Inside, the process was remarkably straightforward. The Pack Council official verified our identities, confirmed our mutual consent, and performed the ritual that officially broke the spiritual connection of our five-year mate bond.
I felt a strange shiver pass through me as the official pack marking severed the last threads binding us together. Not pain, exactly, but a sensation of something fundamental changing-like a weight lifting that I’d carried for so long I’d forgotten it was there.
When it was done, the official handed us each a copy of the severance certificate. This time, I knew they were real.
I held mine carefully, hardly daring to believe it was finally over. After a moment’s hesitation, I handed Arthur his copy.
“Thank you,” I said quietly.
Sarah grabbed the document from my hands, inspecting it with almost comical intensity. “It’s real this time? Not another fake like before?”
“It’s real,” I assured her, unable to keep the smile from my face. “The broken bond is finally over.”
“We should celebrate,” Nathan suggested, his blue eyes warm as they met mine. “Venison dinner tonight? To mark your return and the end of an era.”
“Absolutely!” Sarah agreed enthusiastically. “The new hunting restaurant on Moon Valley Road?”
As they discussed the details, I gathered my belongings, making sure to secure my important healing formulation drafts in my locked drawer—a precaution that had become habit after the incident with Rebecca Foster stealing my work years ago.
That evening, seated at a comfortable table with Nathan and Sarah, I felt a sense of peace that had eluded me for years. The hunting restaurant was elegant but understated, perfect for our small celebration.
“So,” Nathan asked casually, cutting into his venison, “what are your long-term plans in Central Territory? Are you staying this time?”
I nodded, sipping my moonlight tea. “Indefinitely. The Sunstone Territories were beautiful, but I always felt… displaced there. Like I was just passing through.”
“And here?” Nathan’s eyes held mine, genuinely interested.
“Here feels like ” I began, but my words died in my throat as a Beta server passed by, pushing a wheeled healing chair.
The wolf in the chair had his back to me, but I would recognize that profile anywhere-the sharp jawline, the distinctive set of his shoulders. As he turned slightly to say something to the server, I caught a glimpse of golden eyes.
Florian.
I was on my feet before I realized I’d moved. “Excuse me,” I muttered to Nathan and Sarah, hurrying after the Beta and the healing chair.
But when I reached the corridor, they had vanished. I stood there, puzzled and disoriented, wondering if I’d imagined the whole thing.
Suddenly, a territory den door opened partway, and a familiar face emerged-the same stylish she-wolf who had opened the door for me at Northern Territory’s main den. She leaned against the doorframe, studying me with amused curiosity.
“Looking for Florian?” she asked, her tone light but her eyes sharp.
My heart leaped. “Is he here?”
Instead of answering, she pushed the door fully open, revealing a private hunting room. And there, seated at the table with his back to the door, was Florian Stormhowl.
The she-wolf smiled, a hint of challenge in her expression. “Florian, your ordinary pack friend is looking for you,” she announced, her tone laden with hidden meaning.
