(Florian’s POV)
The moonlit forest around the hunting lodge felt like a battlefield waiting to explode. Every shadow could hide an enemy. Every sound could signal discovery or death.
Arthur moved beside me with deadly precision. His massive form was surprisingly quiet for an Alpha of his size. Despite years of rivalry between us, we worked together like pack brothers who had trained for decades.
Our shared determination to save Audrey had created something neither of us expected. Perfect synchronization. Perfect trust.
“Visual on the perimeter guards,” Beta Kael’s voice crackled through my earpiece. “Two at the main entrance. One patrolling the north side. All armed with silver weapons.”
I pressed against the trunk of an ancient pine. The rough bark bit through my tactical gear. Arthur crouched behind a boulder ten feet to my right. His dark eyes scanned the lodge’s windows with laser focus.
“Any movement from inside?” I whispered into my comm.
“Thermal imaging shows six heat signatures,” Daniel Hayes reported from Arthur’s team. “One in the central room that matches Audrey’s size. The others are scattered throughout the building.”
My wolf snarled with barely contained rage. Six pack members between us and her. Six obstacles that needed to be eliminated before I could reach the woman I loved.
Six wolves who had helped Nathan terrorize and manipulate her.
Arthur’s voice was barely audible. “The central room is where my father used to hold pack meetings. Stone walls. Limited exits. Only two ways in or out.”
“Perfect for holding someone prisoner,” I muttered. My hands tightened on my weapon until my knuckles went white. “Also perfect for trapping anyone who tries a rescue,” Arthur continued grimly. “We get one chance at this.”
I pulled out the thermal imaging device. The small screen showed heat patterns moving inside the lodge. One figure sat motionless in the center while another paced around her in slow, predatory circles.
Nathan was toying with her. Still talking. Still trying to break her down.
“She’s still moving around, which is good,” Arthur observed, looking over my shoulder at the display. “But I count at least six pack members between us and her.”
My golden eyes burned with predatory intensity. Two years of suppressed fury demanded release. Two years of believing she was lost to me forever. Two years of Nathan’s manipulation and lies.
“Then we go through them,” I said. My voice came out as a growl.
Arthur nodded. His expression was equally deadly. “No survivors among his pack. They chose their side.”
We began moving toward the lodge with methodical precision. My military training from years of pack security operations kicked in automatically. Every step was calculated. Every breath controlled. Every heartbeat measured.
The first guard never saw us coming. He was checking his pack device when Arthur materialized from the shadows like death itself. Arthur’s hand clamped over the wolf’s mouth while my silver blade found its mark between his ribs.
The guard’s eyes went wide with shock. Then they went dark forever.
“One down,” I whispered into my comm device.
We dragged the body into the underbrush. No time for ceremony or regret. The wolf had chosen to help Nathan. He had chosen his fate.
The second perimeter guard was patrolling the north side of the building. He moved with lazy confidence, clearly not expecting any trouble.
Beta Kael’s team created a distraction. A small explosion in the distance made the guard turn his head. Arthur and I flanked him from opposite directions while his attention was diverted.
Another quick, silent elimination. Another body hidden in the darkness.
“Perimeter is clear,” Arthur reported softly. “Moving to phase two.”
As we approached the lodge’s main structure, Nathan’s voice drifted through the walls. Even muffled by stone and wood, I could hear the twisted obsession in his tone. The sick satisfaction.
“…everything I did was out of love for you, Audrey. Can’t you see that?”
My vision went red for a moment. Nathan was still tormenting her. Still trying to justify his manipulation and betrayal. Still pretending his obsession was love.
Arthur placed a restraining hand on my shoulder. He sensed my barely controlled rage threatening to boil over.
“Stay focused,” he said quietly. “We need to be smart about this. One mistake and she dies.”
I forced myself to breathe deeply. I channeled my fury into cold precision. Into the kind of calculated violence that would end this nightmare forever.
“He’s completely obsessed,” I said through gritted teeth. “This won’t end with negotiation.”
“I never intended to negotiate,” Arthur replied grimly. His dark eyes held the same deadly promise mine did.
We identified two potential entry points to the main room. Arthur would take the front entrance while I circled around to the side door. The plan required perfect timing and absolute trust.
I gripped my weapon tighter. Every muscle coiled for explosive action. Through the window, I saw Audrey’s head turn slightly in my direction.
For just a moment, our eyes met across the glass.
Something passed between us in that instant. A flash of recognition. A spark of hope. A promise that this nightmare was about to end.
She gave the tiniest nod. So subtle that Nathan missed it completely.
She was ready. Waiting for the opportunity to act. Waiting for me to keep my promise to protect her.
Arthur’s voice came through the earpiece with deadly calm. “All teams, initiate on three. Two years of planning ends tonight.” “One.”
I positioned myself directly beside the side door. I felt the familiar weight of my weapon in my hands. Every second of training crystallized into perfect focus. Every moment of rage became cold precision.
Every ounce of love I felt for Audrey transformed into unstoppable determination.
“Two.”
Nathan was still monologuing. Still oblivious to the storm about to break around him.
“You’ll understand eventually that I’m the only one who truly cares about your welfare,” he said to Audrey. “The only one who’s ever really protected you.”
Through the window, I saw Audrey’s jaw clench with suppressed fury. She was done listening to his lies.
“Three.”
I drew on two years of suppressed anger and protective instincts. I prepared to unleash everything I had on the wolf who had terrorized the woman I loved.
Time to end this nightmare forever.
