(Audrey’s POV)
The harsh fluorescent lights of the Wolf Medical Center reflected off Howard Mitchell’s sharp gaze as he glared at me, seated just inches away. His irritation was evident, his posture tense as if ready to strike. His voice cut through the air like a blade.
“You’re Arthur Moonstone’s mate,” he sneered, leaning in as if to emphasize his displeasure. “Don’t try to sell me that sob story about having no money.” His lips twisted into something between a smirk and a snarl. “What Luna doesn’t have access to the pack treasury?”
I met his eyes and drew a deep breath. Staying calm in the presence of this man was harder than I thought. “I’m severing my mate bond with Arthur,” I replied evenly.
The words hung between us, and for a moment, the room felt heavy. Howard’s expression froze as recognition dawned. His brow furrowed, lips parting in genuine shock as if I had delivered news of an apocalypse.
“Excuse me?” He sat back in his chair, blinking rapidly.
“You heard me,” I said again, the steel returning to my tone, though my chest ached saying it aloud. “Next month, the severance will be legally finalized.”
Timothy, seated meekly by his father, audibly gasped, his wide eyes darting between me and Howard.
Howard clicked his tongue as he rubbed his temples in frustration, muttering under his breath. “You’ve got to be joking.” When I didn’t respond, he shook his head and rose to his feet.
“What kind of fool are you?” he spat, throwing his hands in the air. “You’re severing your bond with the Alpha King? The wealthiest, most powerful wolf in the entire region?”
“It’s not your business,” I said, my voice quiet but firm.
“It is my business!” Howard barked, slamming his fist on the small table between us. The sound startled Timothy, who flinched like a scolded pup. “We raised you! Fed you! Clothed you when no one else would! Or have you forgotten what you owe us?”
The memories surged forward before I could stop them-hungry nights spent in a cold basement, bruises I hid from the world, taunts that cut deeper than any claws. I gritted my teeth.
“I don’t owe you anything,” I said, my words clipped. “Least of all for the way you treated me.”
Howard narrowed his eyes, his jaw tightening. “You’d really throw us away like that, huh?” His voice turned mocking as he added bitterly, “Big bad Luna thinks she’s above the people who gave her a home.”
My wolf growled, clawing beneath my skin, wanting to defend me against this nonsense. But I quickly reined it back. Losing control wouldn’t help here.
“I’m not above anyone,” I replied coldly. “But don’t for a second think you’ll guilt me into anything.”
Howard’s face darkened, his lip curling with amused contempt. “So, what then? You think you’re just going to breeze through life without Arthur’s resources? Without him cleaning up your messes?”
“I’ll manage.”
Howard scoffed, letting out a bark of laughter. “You? Manage? Don’t make me laugh.”
The mocking in his tone ignited something within me. My voice rose, charged with simmering anger. “It’s my life to figure out. Not yours.”
“Fine. Let’s talk specifics then,” Howard said, his words suddenly icy. “You’ll still pay for Juliette’s treatment. And you will keep sending us monthly support. You’ve been doing it for years. Don’t stop now.”
My jaw tightened, my knuckles whitening with the effort to remain composed. “Where’s the money I’ve been sending?”
Howard rolled his eyes, slapping Timothy’s knee as if for reinforcement. “Where do you think? Timothy’s mate-marking ceremony isn’t going to fund itself.”
His words hit me like a slap. As rage poured through me, I opened my mouth to say something-I wasn’t sure what. But before I could find the words, Juliette’s voice cut through the rising tension like a whip.
“Enough!” she snapped from her bed. Weak as she was, her wolf-powered aura flared for just a second, enough to silence Howard and even Timothy. Her frailty did nothing to dim the authority in her tone. “All of you. OUT!”
Howard’s usually unshakable bravado faltered a bit, but he quickly recovered. “Juliette, we’re just-“
“Leave,” she rasped, her eyes flashing briefly. It was only a flicker of dominance, but it made even Howard take a step back.
Muttering curses under his breath, he grabbed Timothy by the arm. “Let’s go,” he growled, glaring at me one last time before dragging the younger man out of the room.
Once the door slammed shut, the silence felt heavy again.
Juliette closed her eyes briefly, taking a deep breath. When they opened, the anger was gone, replaced with something softer.
“We need a private ward,” he said sharply, his voice grating against my ears. “Special wolfsbane treatments too. Do you need me to explain why it’s necessary?”
I clenched my fists at my sides, biting back the sharp retort trying to escape. Instead, I nodded tersely.
“Fine. I’ll arrange it,” I replied, my voice curt. I barely gave him a glance as I turned toward the VIP floor.
More than anything, I wanted to leave, to get away from them. But the moment I reached the staircase leading to the private ward, raised voices caught my attention.
Instinctively, I stiffened.
“I’m warning you, Snowfang,” a familiar voice growled-not in the usual calm way I was used to but feral and raw.
Nathan.
My pulse quickened as I hurried forward, the adrenaline rushing through me. What had happened? Why was he-
The scene before me made me freeze mid-step.
Nathan Snowfang had Arthur pinned against the wall, his claws barely held back as fury ravaged his expression. His usually composed demeanor was gone, replaced by something feral, dangerous.
“You don’t deserve her!” Nathan snarled, his breath hot with rage. His hands clenched Arthur’s suit collar tightly, as if itching to do real damage. “Audrey deserves better than someone like you!”
Arthur, despite the visible marks of earlier blows on his face, snarled back, his dark eyes blazing with challenge. Blood dripped lazily from his split lip, yet his defiance remained intact.
“My mate,” Arthur spat, shoving against Nathan’s hold until their balance momentarily wavered. He straightened up sharply, towering like the Alpha King he was. “Audrey is MY mate, Snowfang. Not yours.”
His words were controlled but lethal, each syllable brimming with hostility.
