Chapter 21
But she let that thought go.
“Medication might help,” she said. “But you’d still need to come in for regular sessions.”
Stephanie nodded. She knew that already.
“How about hypnotherapy today?” Jacquelyn offered.
Stephanie hesitated, then nodded again.
She followed Jacquelyn to the recliner and slowly shut her eyes.
At first, everything was just dark and messy.
Then things began to come back into focus. It was a cloudy day.
Stephanie knew right away where she was–cold, sterile lights, that eerie silence.
Elliot lay in front of her, wrapped in a white sheet.
It was that day, years ago, when she had to claim his body
Her mother had been crying her eyes out beside her, but all Stephanie could do was stand there, staring at Elliot’s pale, broken face.

Voices echoed around her. Her mother was screaming while strangers closed in on the Shelton family like vultures, shouting and shoving.
They looked like they wanted to tear Stephanie and her mother apart.
Too weak to fight back, Stephanie was pushed straight into Elliot’s blood.
Those people were like wolves, dangerous and hungry.
Then a pair of feet appeared in front of her.
A young, familiar voice rose above the noise. “Stephanie, you’re with the Humphrey family now.”
Though still just a boy, Maxwell had the calm authority of someone used to being in charge.
He wore a crisp private school uniform, his dark eyes calm and steady.
Something about him made her calm down.
“If anything happens, come find me. I’m Maxwell,” he said.
He gave a small nod, and the people behind him jumped into action.
They cleared the space and got everything under control.
Just like that, Maxwell saved Stephanie from danger.
Then he crouched, took out a handkerchief, and gently wiped the blood and tears from her face.
“Come with me,” he whispered, holding out his hand.

A tear slipped down Stephanie’s check.
She slowly opened her eyes.
A lot had happened since.
Maxwell had taken her and her mother out of that nightmare.
He used the Humphrey name to take care of everything.
Eventually, the Shelton family fell apart. Stephanie lost the privilege and the cushy life she used to have. But she and her mother made it through.
How could she not love Maxwell for that?
