The Apology from My Ex and His Mistress novel Chapter 29

You’re not going to answer it?Roxanne asked cautiously.

The next moment, Maxwell declined the call again and blacklisted her number.

No need to bother,he said calmly.

Roxanne opened her mouth as if to say something but then closed it again. She looked nervous.

She nodded hesitantly.

She tried to look worried, but a glint of triumph flashed through her lowered gaze.

She had planned all of this.

She took the initiative to tell Maxwell about the trending video.

She then showed him the latest gossip.

She only reminded Maxwell to pick up the call to stop him from answering it.

Let’s head home. It’s late,Maxwell said, picking up his coat.

He then helped Roxanne up.

They took the executive elevator down from the top floor of the Humphrey Group.

While the paparazzi captured them exiting the building, Stephanie was being pushed into the emergency room.

Chapter 29

The stretcher rushed down the corridor. Blood from her forehead soaked the white cloth beneath her.

Stephanie drifted in and out of consciousness. As she struggled to keep her eyes open, all she could see were the lights flashing over her head.

A chaotic blend of noise drummed in her ears. She could also hear the anxious voice of a female officer.

I’ve called her husband twice, and he hung up both times. What should we do?

“Should we try again?

What if he still doesn’t answer?

Forget it! Didn’t you see how severe the car crash was? Sure, she only looks like she hit her forehead, but who knows what internal injuries she might have?

Save her first! Keep trying the phone!

Got it!

The shouting grew louder.

There seemed to be some conflict happening nearby.

Stephanie was barely conscious. She could smell the disinfectant.

She vaguely heard arguing. Then a familiar voice cut through the noise. It was McKayla Clark.

McKayla was screaming something as Stephanie was rushed into the emergency room.

And then, she blacked out once again.

McKayla was mad.

Seeing Stephanie, bloodied and unconscious, being wheeled into the ER made her more than worried.

Thank goodness they’d brought her to Northpine Hospital. Thank goodness she happened to be on night duty. Thank goodness she passed by just in time to catch the noise.

Earlier, the ER staff had no idea how to handle Stephanie’s case.

No one had known she was pregnant.

Fortunately, McKayla did.

And luckily, her father was the hospital director, which meant her voice carried weight.

Otherwise, who knew what might have happened to Stephanie?

McKayla approached the female officer making calls with Stephanie’s phone.

She first presented herself as Stephanie’s doctor and friend. Then she figured that the officer was trying to reach Stéphanie’s family. Thus, she took over the phone.

The call log was filled with missed calls. McKayla was even more furious.

Buzz

Her own phone vibrated.

She pulled it out and saw a trending push notification.

Chapter 29

It reads Roxanne Gregg Leaves Humphrey Group Building Late Night With Maxwell Humphrey.

Oh, really? Ignoring calls because he was with his mistress?

McKayla didn’t hesitate. She called Maxwell directly.

No answer the first time.

On the second call, he picked up just before it went to voicemail.

What is it?Maxwell’s voice was cold.

What is it?!McKayla roared. Why the hell didn’t you answer Stephanie’s calls?!

Maxwell frowned.

When he saw it was McKayla calling, his voice dropped even lower. Did Stephanie ask you to call me?

No!McKayla shouted. I’m calling on my own!

At a red light, Maxwell braked and checked his phone. He then unblocked her number.

It received dozens of missed calls.

He scoffed.

If Stephanie hadn’t told McKayla to call, then what was this?

The light turned green, and Maxwell restarted the car. His Aston Martin shot forward smoothly, just like him, unaffected.

Ever since Roxanne had entered the building, the calls hadn’t stopped.

Did he really not know what Stephanie was trying to do?

Chapter 29

You’d better get to Northpine Hospital right now!McKayla ordered.

I’m not going,Maxwell replied coldly.

Stephanie had probably cried to McKayla again, just like always.

This time, she went too far.

She was now having McKayla come after him too.

Ever since the divorce papers were filed, Stephanie’s temper had only worsened.

She was hit by a car.

McKayla’s tone turned from rage to contempt. She left her final words before hanging up.

Maxwell Humphrey, if you’re still a human, just come.

The brakes screamed.

The car stopped violently.

A driver behind them cursed loudly, but Maxwell heard only the beeping of the call disconnecting in his ear. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel.
