Chapter 28
He felt a surge of agitation.
“What’s going on this month?” he asked.
“You mean the workload?”
“Yep.”
“Well, previously, Mrs. Humphrey handled many of the minor issues, like Mr. Heute’s corruption. Only major matters were passed to you. So…”

Maxwell opened his eyes and looked at Edgar.
Edgar understood and replied awkwardly, “Mr. Humphrey, it’s my oversight.”
Maxwell didn’t blame him too harshly. He simply shook his head.
He then asked, “Where’s the contract with the Hall Group?”
Edgar looked down.
“I’m sorry, sir. It hasn’t been compiled yet.”
Maxwell sighed and waved him off.
Edgar felt relieved. He quickly left.
Maxwell stared at the closed office door. He knew the truth.
He and Stephanie had signed the divorce agreement so abruptly that many of her responsibilities hadn’t been well transitioned.

The office was still silent. Only the ticking of the clock could be heard.
The bitter aroma of coffee lingered in the air.
The rising steam from the cup made Maxwell frown harder.
He picked up his phone and looked at the message he’d sent earlier. He was asking Stephanie to return to the Humphrey manor over the weekend.
She still hadn’t replied.
He recalled her resistance before.
Was she still holding a grudge?
As he stared at his phone, someone knocked on the door.
He looked up to see Roxanne Gregg’s smiling face.
“Max,” she said cheerfully as she walked in. “I came to keep you company.”
Maxwell put away his phone and gave her a slight nod.
Roxanne glanced at his phone.
She hesitated and then sat down.
“What’s wrong?” Maxwell noticed that something was off with her.
“Max, did Stephanie contact you today?” Roxann sked hesitantly.
Maxwell looked at her, signaling her to continue.
“I posted a short video this afternoon announcing I’m joining ‘The Ethereal Voice,” she said as she watched his face closely.

“I just wanted to follow the same path she once walked. But I didn’t expect the backlash online…“.
Roxanne hesitated and then asked awkwardly, “Did… Stephanie come to you and complain?”
Maxwell frowned. This afternoon?
He’d been in meetings all day. He hadn’t kept up with anything online.
He glanced at the clock.
It was now 9:15 p.m.
“There’s one more thing…”
Roxanne paused before she went on, “I left the studio around 8:45 p.m. and had this weird feeling. Just now in the parking lot, I realized I’ve probably been followed by paparazzi since I stepped out.”
Looking sorry, she handed her phone to Maxwell.
He saw photos of her leaving Everbloom Floral Studio and entering the Humphrey Group building.
The caption read “Roxanne Gregg seen entering Humphrey HQ late at night; Rumored relationship with Maxwell Humphrey surfaces“.
Below were cruel comments mocking Stephanie for being “on her way out“.
“I’m sorry, Max. I didn’t mean for this to happen Roxanne said tearfully.
Maxwell didn’t feel bothered at all.
He’d planned to go public with Roxanne once the cooling–off period
