Stephanie’s vision blurred and darkened. She forced herself to unlock the door despite the pain and then blacked out completely.

Meanwhile…
In the Humphrey Group building.
Maxwell was reviewing a project proposal.
He had packed his schedule with meetings today.
Many matters required his final decision.
From the afternoon until now, he had been buried in work.
His face looked tenser and tenser.
In the conference room, people all held their breath.
Staring at the report in his hand, Maxwell tapped the table with his fingers.
“Who’s the project manager for this?” He asked. His voice was calm but carried an overwhelming authority.
“Mr. Humphrey, it’s me.” A middle–aged man sto from his forehead.
up, wiping sweat
Maxwell glanced at him. His lips parted slightly. “What’s this?”
The man wiped his sweat again.

Chapter 27
“Well… It’s just that…” He stammered on, unable to give a clear explanation.
He kept dodging the question, offering excuse after excuse. Yet the truth was that he had messed up.
“Enough.”
Maxwell cut him off.
The man began to tremble. He was scared.
“Please, Mr. Humphrey, give me another chance. I swear I’ll fix it!”
Maxwell frowned. His assistant, Edgar Walsh, immediately picked up on the signal.
“Mr. Heute, you didn’t do your job well. Who’s to blame for these results now?”
“I…” The manager tried to defend himself.
But Edgar snapped, “Enough excuses! This project had the full support of the Humphrey Group, but it still failed. Don’t you know where the real problem lies?”
He tried to argue, but Maxwell tossed a file in front of him.
“Even in such a small project lies corruption,” Maxwell said coldly.
The man went pale as death after glancing at the document.
Trembling, he tried to speak, but Edgar waved his hand.
The conference room/doors opened. Internal affairs officers from the company entered and escorted him away.
“Mr. Humphrey, I was wrong! Please, don’t do this!”
Chapter 27
As his pitiful cries faded down the hall, the room grew even more silent.
Maxwell’s icy gaze swept across the room. That was a clear warning.
“Meeting adjourned,” he said and then strode out.
Edgar quickly followed him into the CEO’s office.
Seeing Maxwell rub his brow in the executive chair, Edgar motioned for someone to bring him a cup of coffee.
Maxwell closed his eyes, rubbing his temples.
He was exhausted.
Corruption seemed to be inevitable.
After all, that was how the world worked.
He understood that.
What he didn’t understand was why he’d been feeling especially drained these past few days.
He heard footsteps and soon a cup was placed on the table.
“Max, have some warm water. It’s late, and you should take care of yourself. I added some jasmine petals. It’ll help you relax.”
For a moment, Maxwell thought he heard that familiar voice.
