Betrayed and Dumped: She Rose Stronger Than Ever novel Chapter 17

Stephen watched as she disappeared through the mall’s revolving doors, then finally pulled away.

“Lottie, what are you looking at?” Sonja tugged her arm, glancing in the same direction.

“Oh, um... nothing.” Lottie blinked, forcing a smile. “Let’s go inside.”

As they stepped forward, Lottie couldn’t help but glance over her shoulder again. She relaxed a little when she saw no sign of Rebecca anywhere.

She must have imagined it.

For a second, she was almost certain she’d seen Rebecca getting out of some other guy’s car.

No way. That was impossible.

Everyone who knew Rebecca knew she only had eyes for Bruce. She’d even given up her grad school offer to stay with him. When Lottie first heard about it, she’d rolled her eyes and called Rebecca hopelessly love-struck.

But looking back, Rebecca’s choice didn’t seem so crazy. Bruce’s business had taken off. The Lamonts had started to accept him. He was doing really well now.

And Rebecca was about to rise right along with him.

By all logic, Lottie should feel happy for her. They were lifelong best friends, almost like sisters. They’d grown up together. Rebecca had even talked Bruce into giving Lottie her job.

But...

Lottie bit her lip. She couldn’t remember exactly when it started, but lately, her jealousy of Rebecca had grown stronger than anything else.

Rebecca always seemed to win at everything. Better grades. Prettier face. Even her boyfriend was perfect.

Lottie’s own childhood was a mess. Sure, she’d gotten lucky. Samantha adopted her, then she found her real family, the wealthy Bernans. But her life never quite measured up to what she dreamed. Now, she lived with the constant fear the Bernans would try to marry her off for some business deal.

Sonja’s arrival had changed things in a way Lottie hadn’t expected.
