Betrayed and Dumped: She Rose Stronger Than Ever novel Chapter 39

It looked like the meeting had just ended. Rebecca wasn’t surprised. The Meridian Tech project was a big deal, and practically every company in the industry was fighting to get in on it. She already knew all that. What she didn’t expect was to see Bruce show up in person. Back when Rebecca was still working in sales, she used to ask him to come with her to meet clients. He always said no. “I’m busy. I trust you. You’ve got this.” That was his usual line. But when it was Sonja’s turn to meet with clients, Bruce wouldn’t let her go alone. He showed up himself. That said everything about who really mattered to him.

Rebecca wasn’t hurt. She’d known this for a long time. She raised her head for a second and caught Bruce looking her way. She quickly turned away, focusing on her coffee.

“Bruce? What are you looking at?” Sonja stopped and glanced in the same direction. All she saw was a couple sitting at a table near the entrance, looking cozy together.

Bruce looked away. “Nothing.” For a moment, he thought he’d seen Rebecca, but it must have been his imagination.

The group made their way out to the parking lot. Sonja reached for the Maybach’s front passenger door, but caught sight of Lottie getting ready to open the back door.

Sonja smiled. “Lottie, could you ride with the other two? I’d like to talk to Bruce alone for a bit.”

Lottie pulled her hand back, a little embarrassed, and nodded. “Of course. I’ll ride with Jim.”

Sonja was both the vice president and Lottie’s direct boss now. Saying no just wasn’t an option.

Lottie got into the other car and glanced out the window. Sonja was talking to Bruce. Then, Sonja stepped in close and rested her hand on his shoulder. Bruce, who always seemed so cold and distant, didn’t move away. He just let her get closer.

Lottie’s eyes went wide. They hadn’t even left yet, and Sonja and Bruce were already acting like this. Weren’t they worried someone might see? Then again, what was there to worry about? Of the three coworkers, only she knew Bruce had a girlfriend. The other two, like most people at the company, thought he was single. And there was no way she’d ever sell out Dr. Campbell, not after the promotion and raise.

For a second, Lottie actually felt a little sorry for Rebecca. She’d worked herself to the bone for Bruce for seven years, and then the one who got away came back, and Bruce just… went to her, tail wagging. That had to hurt.

Lottie pulled out her phone, snapped a quick picture, and uploaded it to her secret social account. No one else knew it was hers.
