Rebecca carried the resignation form back to her desk. A few of her closest sales team coworkers gathered around, their faces full of questions and concern.
“Rebecca, you’re back from leave?” Penny, her assistant, hurried over, eyes shining with relief and excitement.
Rebecca gave a small, careful smile. “Yeah, I’m back.”
Penny hesitated, clearly wanting to say more but stopping herself. Her gaze drifted past Rebecca to the private office, where the door now had a shiny new nameplate: Vice President Sonja Campbell.
Rebecca had noticed it right away. She wasn’t surprised at all. Honestly, nothing about Sonja being promoted could shock her anymore. Bruce had kept his feelings for Sonja hidden for years, and now that they were together, he’d probably pull the stars out of the sky if she asked.
“I already know,” Rebecca said, giving Penny’s shoulder a gentle squeeze before turning to the others. “I’m here to finish my resignation.”
Everyone went silent, eyes wide.
Penny was the first to protest. “Rebecca, why should you just hand everything over to her? You’ve worked so hard for this, and now you’re just leaving it all behind?”
“Yeah, don’t let them win. She’s trying to push you out on purpose,” someone else added.
Rebecca felt a lump in her throat. As tough as this was, it meant a lot to see her coworkers stand up for her. Maybe all these years here hadn’t been a waste after all.
If it were just about work, she might have fought for her place. But once feelings got involved, everything changed. Some things just weren’t worth the pain.
She knew, deep down, that she still hadn’t completely let go of Bruce. But time would help. It always did.
She took a breath, letting it all settle. “Thank you, everyone. Really. But I’ve made up my mind. I’m leaving today.”
Penny’s lips started to tremble and her eyes turned red. She looked like she might cry right there.
“Rebecca, can we at least have a goodbye lunch together?” Penny asked softly.
It was their tradition. Whenever someone left, they’d all go out for one last meal. But Rebecca had to head back to Sunforge Tech that afternoon to write code. She just didn’t have time.
