Avery gave a warm smile. “Mr. Duncan, it’s such a pleasure to have you here.”
After greeting Avery, Stephen turned toward Sonja. “Dr. Campbell, we meet again.”
Avery blinked in surprise. “Wait, you two know each other?”
Stephen’s eyes held a hint of amusement. “We crossed paths once at the club. Dr. Campbell’s expertise really stuck with me.”
Back at the club, Sonja hadn’t even understood the questions Stephen asked her. She’d had to look them up later, then got someone to pass her answers along. He never replied, so she figured he either didn’t see the message or just forgot about it.
She really didn’t expect him to remember.
Sonja offered a modest smile. “You give me too much credit, Mr. Duncan. There’s still so much I have to learn from you.”
The rest of the Campbell family noticed Stephen’s interest in Sonja and couldn’t hide their excitement. They jumped at the chance to keep chatting with him, even hinting at working together in the future. Stephen didn’t give them an answer right away, but he didn’t shut them down either. He just said, “I’ll think about it.” That was enough to have the Campbells practically glowing with joy.
Soon, the banquet officially kicked off. Alan and Avery took Sonja and Bruce around the room, making introductions and raising their glasses with the guests. Everyone there was sharp enough to catch on. It was obvious the Campbells had their sights set on the Lamont family and were hoping for a match.
Everyone just smiled and offered their congratulations to Avery, not saying much else.
Off in a corner, Cindy folded her arms and let out a snort. “What a jerk.”
Stephen glanced over, eyebrow raised. “You heard about it?”
“Of course. News travels fast. I just really feel bad for Rebecca. Seven years of relationship just ended like this.” Cindy’s frustration grew as she spoke. She took a big sip of champagne.
