The most exclusive room in the place belonged to Stephen, no question. Inside, the people gathered were the industry heavyweights who had kicked off the forum as corporate speakers, along with their assistants.
So when Stephen brought Rebecca to the prime seat at his side, everyone else just assumed she was his assistant.
Someone joked, “Hey, what happened to Liam? Didn’t he work for you for years? Great guy. Did you really let him go?”
At Duncan Corporation, with the pay and the reputation it had, if someone left, everyone figured it was because they’d been fired, not because they wanted to quit.
Another person looked Rebecca up and down, grinning. “Mr. Duncan, you really know how to pick them. The new assistant looks sharp. And beautiful, too. I’m jealous, honestly.”
Rebecca felt uneasy. She cleared her throat. “Sorry, just to clarify, I’m not Mr. Duncan’s assistant.”
Everyone fell quiet, surprised.
Stephen smiled and jumped in. “Don’t worry, I didn’t fire Liam. In fact, I promoted him. Twice. As for the lady next to me…” He gestured toward Rebecca. “Let me introduce you. This is Ms. Rebecca Harper. She’s the new CEO I’ve brought in to run Sunforge Tech.”
The room went still, eyes wide with shock.
The CEO of Sunforge Tech was a lady? And so young?
Suddenly, Rebecca could feel the way people were looking at her, sizing her up, second-guessing her. Did she really deserve it, or was there something else going on?
