Chapter 11
Meanwhile, Maverick wasn’t faring any better.
He asked everyone he met if they knew Hazel, but all the passing students shook their heads.
One helpful student suggested: “Dude, this random approach won’t work. Why not check with the student administration office or the registrar? They can look her up in the system–way faster, man!”
Maverick felt like an idiot for not thinking of this sooner and thanked the student profusely.
He really was being stupid, searching in such an inefficient way.
With this new direction, Maverick sprinted to the registrar’s office and found the administrátor in charge of student records.
“Ma’am, my girlfriend is also a new student, but I can’t reach her. Could you help me check if she’s registered yet?”
The administrator hesitated for a long time, only agreeing after Maverick mentioned donating a library building to the university.
She searched the system several times but couldn’t find any record of Hazel Montgomery Not even anyone with a similar
name.
Now the administrator herself became uncertain.
“Young man, are you sure your girlfriend’s name is Hazel Montgomery? No spelling mistakes?”
She pointed at the screen, double–checking.
Maverick nodded emphatically: “Yes, that’s right. How could I possibly get her name wrong?”
Now the administrator grew anxious and checked the new student admission records.
After searching multiple times with both Maverick and herself scrutinizing the lists, she finally concluded:
“I’m sorry, but the Hazel Montgomery you mentioned isn’t a student at our university. She’s not on this year’s admission list or any previous years!”
“The system records don’t lie. Could your girlfriend have… misled you? If that’s the case, you might want to file a police report right away!”
The administrator added with genuine concern.
Hearing this, Maverick felt like he’d been struck by lightning. His mind echoed with a deafening roar:
What… did he just hear?
Stanford hadn’t admitted Hazel?
Then where had she gone?
