Ivy’s POV
I was at the foot of the stairs when I heard the doorbell ring Camilla was rushing to get it, but I stopped her. “Don’t worry, Camila. Ipstic
“Thank you, Miss hy”
I smiled at her. I got to the door after the third ring. I peeked through the peephole; there was a lady with her back to the door. I opened it. “Hello…”
She turned around sharply, her long dark curly hair moving with her. Curious brown eyes openly checked me out as she hit into an apple in her hand. She had a lot of suitcases around her. She looked so familiar, the wheels in my head were still turning when she spoke up.
“You look so much better in person… and that’s not to say you don’t look good in your pictures,” she rambled on. “You slay as well, but in kissed her fingers, making kissing noises. “Just perfect!”
person…” She
I broke into :
o a wide smile. The dark hair and brown eyes should have been a giveaway, she looked like a female version of Asher. Their eyes were a darker shade of brown, like honey, unlike Marcus’s.
I also remembered her from a few of the social functions we attended. Unlike her brothers, she had a complete disregard for high society. She would always be at those parties, playing mischievous pranks on the guests.
I extended a hand to her, but she pushed past me and pulled me into a hug. “Janine Starling, just in case you don’t remember…”
I chuckled. “Oh, don’t worry, I do!
Her arms were still wrapped around me. “hy Whitfield, still as elegant as always.” She pulled away and peered at me. “You never wanted to join in my shenanigans…
laughed aloud. “Unlike you, I didn’t have brothers to hold the front for me.”
She nodded and pulled away. “You have a point.” She glanced at all her suitcases. “I told them I didn’t need any help and sent them away. This looks like a lot” she looked up at me with pleading eyes. “Can you lend me a hand, please?”
on as we took the luggage in, a staff member helped us carry it inside.
I did, and as soon as we
“Sorry to barge in on you like this. I left Asher a message, but he’s been too busy to return my texts. My parents‘ house was out of the question, I don’t oven want them to know I’m back in town. I’m going to keep it a secret for as long as I can. Left with the two options of my annoying brothers, I picked the less annoying one…”
“I could argue that…“I chirped in with a smile. Asher had been the only Sterling sibling who always managed to grate my nerves. Marcus never bothered me much when we were young. Aside from the occasional pleasantries we exchanged, we didn’t talk much growing up. Janine and had moments where we played together, but that only lasted for a while.
I had to be present at functions; unlike her, I didn’t have the luxury of slipping away, I was the only child of the Whitfields. I had to suck it up and interact. with all the other guests. Asher was a different story; he teased me all day long. I was thankful when he was absent from functions, and now we were married. Asher and I were married. It still took a lot of getting used to.
She grinned. “Asher truly lucked out with you. How did he manage to get married to you? I can’t wrap my head around it….
I smiled at her. Well, it was one thing we had in common. I, too, found it hard to believe that Asher and I were a married couple. “It’s a really long story.. Isaid to her.
She shrugged. “It’s a good thing we have time/then, I’m here to stay. You can tell me all about it. By the way, I need a drink; my throat is parched.”
“Water? lood…
“Red wine, please?”
Chapter 46
I stared at her in surprise. It was still clear as day outside. It was a hot afternoon, definitely not the time to be drinking wine.
As if to answer my question, she said, “The best time to get a drink is any time you need a drink. Now come on, Sister in law, let’s go have a chat ove wine!”
We walked to the bar, and poured us each a drink.
“Sorry I couldn’t attend your wedding it was…”
“Impromptu,” interjected. “Even I didn’t know I was going to get married until the night before. He asked me to marry him out of the blue, and I said yes. To be fair, I had just walked in on my boyfriend with my best friend….
Her eyes widened in shock. “Tell me you beat up someone, at least?” she asked.
I shook my head and giggled. “No, I didn’t.”
*Well, give it a good thought. If you ever need to, I’m just one call away.”
I nodded and took a sip of my drink, a wide smile on my face. “I’ll keep that in mind…I couldn’t lie, it felt good to open up to her, and the made it really easy. Save for Asher, I hadn’t told anyone about how I felt that night.
I hadn’t truly addressed all the emotions was feeling from that betrayal Max and Taylor were the only people I had outside my parents. I didn’t have friends to talk to about it, so I had bottled it up and ignored all I was feeling
“I hope he pays you some sort of compensation for being married to him. The money has to be worth it, at least…
“You know, I didn’t think of that, I should put that somewhere in the contract.”
She nodded. “You should. Have them draw up a new contract. There’s got to be some sort of reward for staying married to my brother.
I chuckled and took a large sip. “Tell me about it”
“How are he and Marcus?” she quizzed. “Have they worked through their issues?”
I shock my head. “No, they act like they are sworn enemies…
“Oh, they are…” she responded. “They have been at each other’s throats for so long now. I’m not sure I can remember a moment in their lives when they were ever good.”
“What’s it about, anyway?”
“Who knows?” she shrugged. “They’re boys, they’ll always find something to argue about. It started off as normal sibling rivalry. They were two boys with a lot of things to fight for, and then it got worse. Fueled by my father’s encouragement of healthy.” – she madè air quotes with her fingers. “Competition, they just got worse…” She trailed off. “I guess it’s just part of being a Sterling. We are quite dysfunctional, if you haven’t noticed…
I chuckled. “Every family has its troubles, I guess…”
Time passed, and we sat there on those high stools, chatting like we were old friends catching up. We lost track of time or anything else for that matter
