The smell of fresh coffee hit me as I pushed open the door to the little café.

Ivy was perched on a stool by the window, her shoulders hunched, eyes focused on her phone, scrolling, engrossed in whatever it was she was staring at.

She didn’t see me walk in at least, not at first. Well, she wasn’t supposed to. I had actually stalked her and followed her here.

I crossed the room; there were only a few people in the café. The café was located on the top floor of a high–rise building, exclusive to top celebrities.

I slipped into the chair across from her. She finally looked up, her gaze turning sharp, annoyed.

“Ivy,” I said her name like it was the sweetest thing ever. “Didn’t think I’d see you here.”

She sighed, setting her phone down deliberately. She rolled her eyes. “Yeah, right?” Her tone was flat, detached. “What a surprise!” she exclaimed sarcastically, picking up a book on the table and flipping the pages open.

I knew where she was going with this, but I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction. I leaned against the edge of her table, close enough that she’d have to notice me but not so close she could accuse me of invading her space. “What are the odds, huh? Both of us here at the same time.”

“Not great,” she said, her lips curving into a thin, humorless smile. “And quit with the act, Max. I’m not dumb. I know you didn’t just happen to walk into the coffee shop I’m at. It’s on the top floor; you don’t just stumble onto the top floor.”

I chuckled and opened my mouth to speak, but then the waiter walked in. “Hello, sir, can I get your order?”

I smiled politely at the young lady. “Of course. I’ll have the scones and black coffee, please.”

“Okay, you caught me.” I raised my hands in surrender when we were finally alone. “It might not be completely coincidental, but I managed to stumble upon you today. There was a bit of luck at play. You can see it as me grabbing fate by the balls and bending it to my will.”

She stared at me, unimpressed. “What do you want?”

“Just coffee,” I said with a shrug, giving her a once–over. She looked as beautiful as ever in that sundress and high ponytail. “And maybe a conversation

with an old friend.”

Her eyes narrowed, but she didn’t move. Couldn’t, really – not without squeezing past me or causing a scene. She knew it. I knew it. It was best for both of us to keep things quiet.

The media was already having a field day with the news of the triangle between the both of us and Taylor. The last thing we needed was any more attention. I knew that, and that was why I was here.

It was an ambush. She was going to talk to me whether she liked it or not.

“Old friends usually leave each other alone,” she said, crossing her arms. “Especially when one of them clearly isn’t interested.”

“Oh, come on,” I said, lowering my voice. “We can’t talk? Catch up a little?”

She leaned back, her eyes darting to the window. The muscles in her jaw tightened, but she didn’t say no. That was something.

“Fine,” she said finally. “Talk. But make it quick.”/

“Quick? Ivy, you wound me.” I smirked, but she didn’t return it. Her face stayed blank, expressionless, like she was counting the seconds until I’d leave.

“You’re stalling,” she snapped. “What do you want to say?”

I gawked at her. This beautiful woman was mine. She had been head over heels for me, and somehow I had managed to fuck it up. I needed to win her
