I was joking–maybe only partly. However, that was the original plan. I just wanted to see if he’d smirk or roll his eyes like he always did when I said something dumb. I didn’t actually expect him to move.
But he did.
Before I could even breathe, his hand slid to the back of my neck, and he pulled me toward him. My joke crumbled in my throat, and suddenly I was at his expense. I could see every detail of his face. His lashes were so long that they cast faint shadows on his skin.
Then, heeding to my request, he kissed me.
It wasn’t rough, but it wasn’t soft either. Instead, it felt like he was trying to figure something out. His lips pressed against mine, and the world around us blurred until all I could hear was the sound of soft flesh meeting rough ones.
My hands, traitorous as ever, clutched the front of his shirt. I didn’t even know why. Maybe because I didn’t trust my legs to keep me steady. His warmth seeped into me, spreading from where our lips met, down to my chest, my fingers, my knees.
I froze for a second, but then his voice broke the air. “You started this,” he whispered against my lips.
His tone sent a shiver through me. That was all it took for my resolve to melt completely. I kissed him back.
He exhaled sharply. His hand moved to my cheek, and the other anchored around my waist, keeping me close. The air between us turned warmer. I could still taste the chocolate from earlier faintly sweet, mixed with his scent I had grown accustomed to.
The kiss deepened, becoming something that made my heart ache. I didn’t know how long it lasted, but when he finally pulled back, my lips tingled and my lungs burned. I looked up at him, dazed.
He looked at me like he was trying to memorize the moment. Then, almost as if he’d caught himself doing something forbidden, he tore his gaze away. He stepped back, running a hand through his hair, his breathing uneven.
“We have to stop now,” he said, voice husky.

I nodded, though my body hadn’t quite caught up to my brain. My lips still tingled, and the ghost of his warmth clung to my skin.
He exhaled and gave a faint, self–deprecating laugh. “Crap,” he muttered under his breath.
I frowned. “What?”
He looked down, and for the first time, I saw a wide smile. This one reached his eyes.
“I might actually like sweet things,” he said quietly.
The sun was barely up when I stirred awake. The first thing I saw was Abel.
For a moment, I didn’t move. My mind was still hazy from sleep, caught somewhere between a dream and reality. However, when I felt the slow rhythm of his breathing beside me, I knew it wasn’t a dream.
He was really there.
He was asleep–deeply, peacefully, like he hadn’t in a long time. His lashes were long, his features sharp even in rest, and his hair fell slightly over his forehead. I found myself smiling before I could stop it.
My fingers moved before my brain caught up. I reached out and traced the outline of his jaw. His skin was warm under my touch, smooth and solid. I moved up to his cheek, brushing a strand of hair away.
“Handsome,” I whispered without meaning to.
I couldn’t help but giggle. Last night flashed through my mind–how everything had changed with one kiss. I’d fallen asleep in his arms, wrapped in his scent and the sound of his heartbeat.
He always slept on the couch, claiming it was “more comfortable” or “better for his focus,” but I knew it was just an excuse to keep his distance. That distance had always been his armor. But last night, he didn’t wear it.
I leaned closer, staring at him again. “You really are something else,” I murmured.
When my gaze dropped to his lips, my face burned. I pressed a finger against my own lips, smiling to myself. That was when I felt him move.
His eyes fluttered open. For a second, he looked disoriented; however, when his gaze mine, it sharpened.
