~ Lyra~
Surprise. Surprise. Surprise. The word was bouncing around in my skull like it was a drumbeat, like someone had taken a hammer and nailed it to the inside of my head. Surprise? No. No, this wasn’t a surprise.
A surprise is someone bringing you cake on your birthday. A surprise is a fucking gift bag. This was a nightmare wearing a party hat, and I was the guest of honor chained to the chair while everyone laughed at me.
I kept replaying her words over and over.
My wolf was screaming now. Kill her. Tear her throat. Kill her. And I wanted to. Goddess, I wanted to. But my body wouldn’t listen.
My heart was hammering so loud it drowned out everything else, and my stomach was rolling like I was about to vomit my entire soul onto the floor.
And then there was Darren. His smirk His eyes. Watching me like I was prey, like this was entertainment, like I was just another piece on his disgusting little chessboard.
“Surprise,” I whispered back, but it wasn’t funny, it wasn’t playful. It was cracked, broken, bleeding out of my mouth like I was choking on the word.
“Surprise you’re both fucking psychos. Surprise I’m still standing here and not clawing your eyes out. Surprise I haven’t died from the stench of your filth.”
I could feel my chest heaving like there was fire locked inside my ribs, but before I could spit the rage out, Darren’s hand snapped out faster than lightning. His fingers clamped around her chin so tight I swore I heard bone creak “Shut the fuck up before I hit you.”
The entire room shifted. Just like that. Tasha froze. All that smug fire drained from her eyes in a blink, her lips pressed together so fast it almost made me sick, because I knew she was terrified of him. I knew she’d obey him like he was God.
And then it happened.
