Something slipped inside me, something so soft and cold I thought for a second maybe I was dying. Like ice water dripping down my spine, like fingers trailing over my skin that weren’t really there. I gasped and my tears blurred everything, but my heart—it skipped so hard I nearly stumbled. I knew that feeling. I knew it even though I had no right to.
“Damon,” I whispered, my lips trembling so hard I could barely shape the word. I said it like if I whispered it enough maybe he’d come, maybe he’d save me, maybe I wouldn’t have to stand here drowning in this nightmare alone.
“Damon,” I said again, louder this time, choking on it, and the tears ran faster. My whole body was shaking now and I didn’t even care if they saw, if Darren smirked, if Tasha sneered again. None of it mattered. His name mattered. That was all.
Kitten.
I gasped, nearly choking on the air, my lips quivering as the tears ran so fast I couldn’t even see anymore. “Ohhh Damon,” I whispered, louder this time, trembling, my arms wrapping around myself like I could hold the pieces of me together. “ Damon, it’s you, it’s really you, I swear I thought I was going insane but it’s you.”
And then his voice again, sliding down my spine, curling around my ribs, curling right into my heart. Kitten, daddy’s coming. Wait for me. Please. Iust hold on.
I broke. Goddess, I broke so hard it felt like my chest was caving in. “Daddy’s coming,” I repeated like a prayer, sobbing into my own hands, not even caring that Darren and Tasha were staring at me like I’d lost my damn mind.
“Did you hear that? He’s coming for me. Damon’s coming for me.” My voice was high, cracked, and hysterical but I couldn’t stop, I couldn’t stop because if] stopped I’d shatter into dust.
Tasha tilted her head, her lip curled in disgust, but I didn’t care, I didn’t care about her smugness or Darren’s cold smirk All I cared about was that voice.
“Please, Damon, I’m holding on, I’m trying, but it hurts so much, it’s killing me, I don’t know how much longer I can do this,” I whispered through tears, rocking in place, gripping my chest like I could tear it open just to let him crawl inside and save me.
Hold on, kitten. His voice wrapped around me again, firmer this time, like a command. Don’t let go. Don’t break I’m almost there.
I sobbed harder, my whole body shaking like I was going to split in half from needing him. “I’m not letting go, I’m not, I swear, Damon, but please hurry, please, before they kill me, before they laugh at me again, before I lose everything. Please.”
Darren’s eyes narrowed in suspicion but I couldn’t stop whispering. “Run, Damon, please, just run to me, run and save me, because if you don’t I’m gone, I’m nothing, I’m ashes. I need you. I need you more than air.”
“What the fuck are you saying?” he barked, spittle flying from his lips. “Have you gone mad? Are you insane, girl?”
And Goddess help me, I laughed. I actually laughed through my tears, through the choking sobs tearing my throat raw. I laughed like the world was burning and I was the only one who knew the ending.
“He’s gonna kill you,” I gasped, the laugh breaking into hysterical giggles that made my ribs ache. “Do you hear me? Damon’s gonna kill you. He’s coming and you can’t stop him. You can’t stop what’s already in motion.”
Darren’s face twisted, veins popping in his neck, and then he screamed as his hand came down across my face so hard my head snapped to the side but before I could even catch my breath, his leg slammed into my stomach.
My wolf was clawing inside me, shrieking so loud my ears rang, but all 1 could think was what if it’s true, what if he really did bury Damon, what if the voice in my head is nothing but madness? I wanted to vomit. I wanted to scream. I wanted to rip Darren’s eyes out and shove them down his throat. But my knees felt like they were about to buckle under me.
“Come here!” Darren barked suddenly, and before I could even breathe, his hand clamped around my wrist.
The pain shot up my arm as he dragged me forward, my shoulder screaming like it was being ripped from its socket. I stumbled, my stomach still twisting from where he’d kicked but he didn’t stop, not even for a second.
“Tasha! ” he shouted, his grip bruising me. “Bring the clothes. Follow us.”
“No, no, no!” I screamed. “Darren stop! Please! Stop dragging me like I’m some kind of rag! Please, I can’t, I feel so weak, I can’t even breathe, you’re killing me!” My words spilled out fast, messy, choking on tears, but he didn’t even blink He just yanked harder like I was a doll he owned.
And then I saw it.
Blood. Q. My babies.
