Building Her Throne Burying My Heart (Claire) novel Chapter 46

Life really does go in circles, doesn’t it? No matter how far you run, somehow you always end up right back where you started.

There were moments when I just couldn’t take it anymore. My mind drifted in and out, everything felt blurry. I lost count of how many times I collapsed, each time waking up a little more out of it than before. I kept pushing myself all the way until nightfall.

When darkness settled in again, I knew I’d made it. I’d won, in a way. But by then, I had nothing left to give. My body just gave out, and everything went black.

The next thing I knew, I was waking up in a hospital room. I had no clue what time it was. I sat up fast, my heart racing.

Aaron was there at my bedside. As soon as he saw me move, he rushed over. “Lambert, you’re finally awake. You nearly gave me a heart attack, you know that?”

I stared at him, confused. “Why are you here?”

He told me he’d seen a video of me at the cemetery. He tried to call after work, but I didn’t pick up. So he came looking for me and found me passed out. He’d brought me here.

“So it was you,” I said quietly. “Thank you.”

I tried to get out of bed. I needed to find Claire. My mom couldn’t wait any longer. But Aaron stopped me and pushed me gently back. “Where do you think you’re going? Why were you kneeling there all day and night?”

I didn’t want him knowing too much. “It’s just old stuff between me and someone else. It’s fine. Once it’s handled, everything will be okay.”

I tossed the blanket aside and tried to stand, but Aaron grabbed my arm. His face turned serious, a kind of sadness in his eyes I’d never seen before. “You’re not going anywhere. You need to stay here and get better.”

He looked so heavy, his eyes red like he’d been crying or was about to. I glanced at the clock. It was almost midnight. If I didn’t show up now, I wouldn’t get the money.
