“What is he even doing? He’s been gone forever and now he’s not answering his phone.”
Claire huffed in frustration, swapping out the cold towel on Garrison’s forehead. He lay there, looking pale and exhausted, trying his best to comfort her.
With me still missing and my phone out of reach, Garrison actually felt a twisted kind of relief. If I didn’t come back this time, maybe I’d never come back at all.
“Claire, don’t stress,” he mumbled. “He’s probably just on the way. Or maybe...”
He didn’t finish, coughing weakly, but Claire caught his hesitation right away.
“Maybe what? Did he say something to you?”
Garrison pretended to hesitate. “It’s nothing. Some things are better left unsaid, for your own good.”
That only made Claire more suspicious. “Seriously, what is it? Don’t keep things from me. You’ve already started, so just finish.”
Garrison sighed, looking defeated. “Earlier, when I took Lambert his food, he congratulated us. Then he said he wouldn’t be coming to our wedding. He also told me to thank you for the two million.”
“I don’t really know what he meant,” Garrison added, letting his words hang. “But now… I’m starting to think he might have…”
He left the rest unsaid, forcing Claire to finish the thought herself.
“You think he ran away?” Claire’s tone was sharp.
Garrison just looked at her, helpless, before finally going on. “Before he asked you for money, he actually went to my dad. But my dad knows what he’s like and didn’t lend him a thing. When he left home years ago, he took a big chunk of money with him. Now he’s back, and it’s the same story all over again. I probably shouldn’t be telling you this, but I can’t just watch him ruin himself.”
