Building Her Throne Burying My Heart (Claire) novel Chapter 67

Garrison didn’t say anything else. He just closed his eyes, pretending to sleep, not wanting to make things any more obvious. This time, Lambert probably wouldn’t be as lucky as before. On roads like these, a crash almost always meant disaster. Even if he survived, the car would be destroyed, burned up, and any trace of what happened would disappear.

That thought gave Garrison a strange sense of satisfaction.

Claire stayed with him the whole night. When the sun came up, Garrison finally looked a little better.

“We should head down the mountain. You need to take some medicine for your cold.”

“Alright. Let’s go. I’ll have Laird pick us up.”

Claire called Laird, and he set off right away. On his way up, he noticed a big crowd by the roadside, along with some rescue vehicles. But Claire kept urging him to hurry, so he barely glanced at the scene before driving past.

When he picked them up and they started down the mountain, the crowd had grown and completely blocked the road. Laird had no choice but to stop the car.

Rescue vehicles were everywhere, taking up almost the whole road. They seemed to be pulling something—or someone—from the ravine below.

Claire tapped her fingers on the window, impatient. “What’s going on up there?”

“No idea,” Laird replied.

“Well, go find out. We can’t just sit here all day. Why are they blocking everything?”

As they waited, Garrison’s hands started to sweat. He was more nervous about Lambert’s fate than his own. He stared ahead, watching as Laird walked into the crowd to get some answers.
