“There were women before you who tried to marry Curtis by lying,” Nicole said with a smirk. “One even told Mr. Harold she was pregnant with his grandchild. Guess what happened? She vanished. No one ever found her. Trust me, her ending wasn’t pretty.”

Adriana gripped her phone tightly, saying nothing.

“Don’t expect Curtis to save you,” Nicole went on, playing with her hair. “He can’t make it back in time. And even if he could, the results will already be out. Mr. Harold’s his grandfather- he’ll make Curtis agree to a divorce. I’m the one who’ll marry into the Lincoln family. You’re just an orphan. What are you worth?”

Adriana stayed silent.

“Mr. Harold, the results will be ready soon,” Nicole said sweetly. “What are you planning to do with Adriana? I heard she wants to study abroad, using Curtis’s money to buy herself a spot. Why not cancel her place, blacklist her from every industry, and make sure she can’t take another step forward ever again?”

He seemed to agree with every word Nicole said.

“Grandpa!” Adriana snapped, her voice trembling with anger. “You have no right to do that. Even if you doubt me, my marriage to Curtis is real. I’m his legal wife.”

She was shaking now. She knew exactly how ruthless rich, powerful people could be.

you admit you were lying?” Harold glared. “I’ve given you chance after chance, but you just keep deceiving us. You’re manipulative, deceitful, and disrespectful.”

“Mr. Harold, you cannot do this. Adriana is an orphan. Her parents left her at the orphanage door when she was a baby. I raised her. If anyone must take the blame, I will take it as her foster mother. If you want to punish someone, punish me,” Margaret spoke, her voice choking with tears.

“What’s going on, Mr. Harold? Well, fancy that, Nicole is here too.” Outside the VIP lounge, Irene walked in with her assistant. She took off her sunglasses and gave a small, knowing smile. “What’s all this fuss about?”

Curtis had sent her–asked her to look after his little. wife.

Irene’s presence filled the room, calm but commanding. Nicole couldn’t even meet her eyes, afraid she’d be seen right through.

“Family matter? Looks more like bullying to me.” Irene dropped onto a chair casually, crossing her legs.

“Adriana may be an orphan, but she’s made her own way in life,” Margaret said through tears. “She’s bright, hardworking, got into college on her own, and paid her own way. She’s never relied on men for money. She’s not greedy.”

Adriana hugged Margaret, eyes red, shaking her head as if to tell her to stop.

Irene studied Adriana quietly. The girl’s tear–streaked face–it looked so much like her sister’s. And she was an orphan?

Irene suddenly sat up straighter. “Where’s your orphanage?” she asked.

Margaret blinked in surprise. “Miss, it’s not in Haldoria. It’s in a small town up in the mountains.”

Irene froze, hiding her reaction as she sat back down. She’d searched all of Haldoria for years with no results. Could the culprit have abandoned the child somewhere far away?
