Chapter 35 Obedient Like a Doll
Adriana froze and nodded slightly in acknowledgment.
So, people in power weren’t all like Matthew–unable to tell right from wrong.

“Belinda? What’s wrong? Why are you crying like that, sweetheart?” A woman in an expensive designer outfit walked in, pulling a suitcase behind her, looking worried..
“Danielle!” Belinda cried even harder, like she’d just seen her savior. She threw herself into Danielle’s arms but still shot a smug look at Adriana.
Adriana’s heart tightened again. Curtis’s rumored fiancée–Danielle Barton–was here.
The Bartons were way more powerful than Natasha’s family.
“Curtis, no matter what happened, you can’t scold Belinda like that. She lost her mom when she was little. She’s sensitive,” Danielle said, holding Belinda protectively. Her eyes shifted to Adriana.
“So this is the woman Belinda was talking about? Curtis, what are you thinking? Just trying to shut your grandpa up, and now you don’t even care who you’re with?” Danielle frowned, her tone full of disdain.
She looked Adriana up and down with a judgmental stare.
In Danielle’s eyes, Adriana wasn’t worth much and definitely wasn’t worthy of Curtis.
“Ms. Barton, this is my family matter. I’d appreciate it if you didn’t get involved,” Curtis said sharply. He stepped in front of Adriana, blocking Danielle’s stare. “Belinda, if you still can’t see what you did wrong, then don’t come home for now.”
He made it clear–Belinda would be staying at the dorm for a while.
Belinda glared at Curtis. “You’ll regret this! Danielle’s way better than her!”
Then she ran out crying, and Danielle quickly followed after her.
Eva stood off to the side, anxious but too scared to speak.
Adriana stayed quiet too, not sure if she even had the right to say anything.
“I’m sorry,” Curtis said softly, looking at her with guilt. “My family’s complicated. I’ll explain everything later.”
Adriana shook her head.
After all, with a 30–million–a–year salary, this job clearly wasn’t something just anyone could handle.
“Belinda won’t bother you again. If you need anything, just tell Eva,” Curtis added.
Adriana nodded obediently.
She seemed easygoing and didn’t want to fight for anything.
Curtis looked at her, his eyes showing something complicated that she couldn’t read. “I have a dinner meeting tonight, so I might
come back late.”

Adriana froze for a second, a little nervous.
Is he staying here tonight? If so… die we sleeping together or in separate rooms?

Her fingers clenched together unconsciously. Thinking about the 30 million a year, she figured he profil her to be a decoration.

“Don’t wait for me; just go to bed. I’ll take the guest room,” Curtis explained quickly, having likely noticed Adriana’s nervousness,
Adriana let out a small sigh of relief and nodded.
Curtis didn’t say anything after that, but he also didn’t leave. He thought she might ask about Danielle, but she didn’t.
“Mr. Lincoln, is there anything else you need?” Adriana asked softly, noticing Curtis looking at her.
Curtis was quiet for a moment before explaining, “The engagement with the Bartons doesn’t count. Danielle wasn’t the one I was engaged to. The Bartons tricked me and my grandpa, so the engagement was canceled a long time ago.”
Adriana was surprised he’d explain this to her.
She had assumed she was just a decoration to him–bought for 30 million a year. “It’s okay, I won’t pry into your private matters, Mr. Lincoln.”
Curtis frowned slightly, his mood seeming to dip. “From now on, don’t call me that when we’re alone. If you get too used to calling me ‘Mr. Lincoln,‘ it might slip out in front of Grandpa.”
Adriana nodded quickly.
Curtis looked at Adriana, gently lifting her chin to examine her swollen cheek. “I meant to ask earlier. What happened to your face?” Adriana instinctively stepped back and covered her cheek with her hand. “I, uh, bumped into something while walking.”
Curtis didn’t press further and simply nodded. “Get some rest, then.”
