“Four years–every birthday, Valentine’s Day, every little holiday–you gave me a mini cake, a bouquet, a bag of fruit… Those hardly count, do they? But what about what I gave you? I knew you lacked neither money nor gifts, so everything I gave you was paid for by pulling multiple all–nighters at part–time jobs and saving up.

Every gift Adriana had ever given Matthew had been chosen with care.
Matthew, on the other hand, had never put real thought into gifts for her.
He always said the same thing, “If you like it, buy it yourself.”
“Tell me, Mr. Langford–what exactly did you ‘keep‘ me with?” Adriana pressed.
Matthew stared at her, rattled–truly rattled.
He had to admit Adriana never spent recklessly… and she never asked him for money. Calling it “keeping” really was over the line.
“Adriana, there’s no need to quibble. A girl like you from an orphanage–staying with a man for money–is disgraceful in itself.” Natasha stepped in when Matthew fell silent, frowning.
They’d agreed: first destroy Adriana’s reputation so the Lincolns would have to abandon her. Then Adriana would obediently sign a letter of leniency for Mia and Rufus.
But now that the reporters were here, Natasha had greased the wheels–and Matthew wouldn’t speak.
“For money?” Adriana looked at Matthew. “Then how much did Mr. Langford spend on me, in total?”
Matthew said nothing.
“Matthew, say something,” Natasha urged, anxious.
If he opened his mouth, it would carry weight.
Even a random figure would be believed by many.
Adriana watched him, waiting to hear just how repulsive he could get.

“Matthew?” Natasha grew flustered as the cameras lingered.
Matthew slowly slipped his arm from Natasha’s grip and read hoarse. “Adriana, can we talk?”

Adriana’s wrist, voice
Adriana yanked free. Her tone was icy. “Mr. Langford, your fiancée and the press are watching. Please show some self–respect.”
He tried, instinctively, to catch hold of her again, but it felt like he couldn’t hold on anymore.
Facing the reporters, Adriana spoke, steady and clear, “About the ‘kept woman‘ claim–this is the last time I’ll address it. It’s fabrication, slander, and defamation. If it happens again, I’ll call the police and pursue liability.”
Her final glance landed on Matthew.
Because that word-‘kept‘–had come from his mouth.
A surge of resolve rose in her. Curtis had said he wouldn’t leave her to face this alone.
They were husband and wife–even if only by contract.
“Mr. Langford, if you’re unclear on the law, consult your attorney. Publicly spreading falsehoods has consequences. Think twice.” With that, Adriana walked straight toward campus.
She was no longer the cowering, self–effacing girl she once was.
At least while this marriage existed, she had someone at her back.
Matthew stood there, stunned, for a long time.
This Adriana … really wasn’t the same.
With him, she’d been obedient, timid, always swallowing grievances–no matter how far he went, a little coaxing made it right again.
Now, it felt like he’d truly lost her.
The old Adriana wasn’t coming back.
“Not a single word from today gets published. And no twisting the facts,” he warned the reporters, voice rough.
They traded looks, then glanced at Natasha.
