Matthew stood outside, watching Adriana through the window.

The professor gave Matthew a nod, then hurried away like someone escaping.

Whispers and small talk spread through the room.

Matthew came in and sat down beside Adriana.

Seeing Matthew, Cheryl called out happily, “Matthew!” However, Matthew didn’t even glance at her.

“Adriana, this is my fault,” Matthew said, apologizing.

Adriana ignored him and stood to leave; Matthew grabbed her wrist and pulled her back into her seat. “Mia … she never suffered like others did growing up. She can’t handle going to prison.”

Adriana felt her throat burn, but said nothing.

“Consider this me begging you. If you let her go, I’ll do anything you want,” Matthew said, looking at Adriana. “Even … call off the engagement to Natasha and marry you.”

He thought he’d already offered the largest concession: abandoning his engagement to save his sister.

“Mr. Langford, you’d really sacrifice anything for your sister,” Adriana said, mocking herself for ever loving a man like him.

“I don’t want to hurt you.” Matthew exhaled.

He truly did not want to hurt her further to force compliance.

He wanted to talk.

“How can you hurt me more?” Adriana pulled her wrist back. “Matthew, I’m already married. My husband is Curtis.”

“Adriana!” Matthew’s voice turned urgent. “Curtis marrying yo man. Don’t be naive.”

Adriana ignored him and tried to leave.

Matthew rubbed his brow, pulled a few photos from his phone, and slapped them on the desk. “Curtis keeps a woman at the Haldoria convalescent home–Cynthia Reese.”

Adriana froze for a beat and looked down at Matthew’s phone.

There were pictures of Curtis pushing a woman in a wheelchair.

“That woman used to be Curtis’s tutor and his first love. He once caused a scene with his grandfather and went to Moweland for her. The girl Curtis keeps with him, Belinda–she’s that woman’s daughter,” Matthew said, taking a breath and looking at Adriana.

Adriana’s fingers tingled–Belinda’s mother was indeed still alive.

“He married you as a scheme, because you’re an orphan–easy to control and manipulate. The Lincolns wouldn’t allow him to marry a divorced woman or one much older; you’re just an excuse,” Matthew said, convinced Adriana was foolish.

Matthew thought, How could Curtis, who was raised in a powerful family, have genuine feelings for her?

“It’s all manipulation. Once Curtis’s grandfather dies, he’ll toss you woman,” Matthew continued.

His words were harsh, but he believed them true.

After speaking, she walked away.

Matthew’s fingers tightened. He had never imagined Adriana would leave him so decisively.
