Jerome’s expression darkened at her words. He remembered what his mother had said in the lobby and forced a smile. “I ran into Mom in the lobby. Something urgent came up at the office, so she had to leave. She told me to tell you to rest up and not to worry.”
“The company’s been having some trouble lately, and it’s been hard on her, handling everything by herself.”
Joanna studied him. She knew how much he cared for her and that he wouldn’t lie. “I’ll go help her as soon as I feel better.”
Ever since Ceryn Corp. had pulled their partnership, the company’s situation had gone from bad to worse.
“I wonder who the CEO of Ceryn Corp. is. When I’m discharged, I’ll pay him a visit personally. I need to know why they suddenly withdrew from the partnership.”
Jerome hadn’t known about this. “Joanna, you should just focus on getting better.”
She smiled. “You’re right. It was my fault this time. I shouldn’t have hurt myself over someone else.”
That cut had been for nothing. Sebastian was ignoring her now, and it was all because of Natalie. If she weren't in the picture, none of this would be necessary.
Dad should have just finished the job back then and killed her. Then she wouldn’t be standing in my way now.
She couldn’t accept this outcome.
Hearing her words, Jerome reached out and gently stroked her hair, his heart filled with a mix of emotions. She looked so pale and pitiful. The pain she must have felt when she’d tried to kill herself must have been unimaginable.
“Joanna, it’s all that monster Natalie’s fault. I’ll find a way to get revenge for you.”
Joanna’s eyes darkened. “I’ll be fine,” she said softly. “She is your sister, after all. I don’t want you two to become enemies.”
These illegitimate children… they will all disappear from this world, one by one.
She would become the true Ms. Scott. She would wait for him to return and give her the greatest love in the world.
“So what if she’s my sister? In my heart, you’re the only sister I have,” Jerome said, his gaze softening as he gently patted her head.
Joanna’s spirits lifted, a faint smile gracing her lips. “Thank you. You’re the best to me. I’ll get better soon, so you won’t have to worry anymore. You should go spend time with Yvonne. She’s pregnant and needs you.”
The thought of becoming a father filled Jerome with joy. “Yes, you’re right. I’ll go see Yvonne as soon as you’re discharged. I can’t believe I’m going to be a dad in just a few months. I’m so happy.”
He really liked Yvonne. She was free-spirited and lived life to the fullest, unlike their old neighbor, Zenobia, who was just a bookworm.
