An expression of utter disbelief washed over Sebastian’s handsome face. All this time, he had believed it was the famous doctor his grandmother found who had cured him. Natalie had given all the credit to his grandmother, to that doctor. The truth was, the one who had healed him was Natalie.
The process had been harrowing, fraught with danger. His gaze was fixed on the van ahead. Natalie, you loved me with your life, and I never even realized it. No, that wasn’t true. He had felt it, in her year of meticulous care, but he hadn’t cherished it. The moment Joanna returned, everything had changed. At first, Natalie had tried to defend herself, but he hadn’t believed her, and the rift between them had grown wider and wider.
“Luna,” Sebastian’s voice was hoarse, thick with regret. “I didn’t know. Thank you.”
Luna’s expression was one of agony, as if every sacrifice Ms. Sanders had made was a fresh wound. “Your apology is cheap. You will never understand the depth of her love, how she gave her heart and soul to you, only to be left for dead. I’m just glad she doesn’t love you anymore. It’s a relief.”
“And the reason I’m telling you this now is because she never would. She didn’t want you to feel indebted to her. All she ever wanted was a simple, ordinary love.” Luna’s eyes filled with tears. Ms. Sanders had asked for nothing, and still, these people had shattered her. Who said that loving someone with all your being meant they couldn't be out of reach? If the person you loved had no heart, you could die for them and they wouldn't feel a shred of guilt.
When Sebastian heard the words “doesn’t love you anymore,” a hollow ache spread through his chest, like the slow, dull twist of a knife. He clenched his jaw, his eyes still glued to the van.
Luna took a deep breath, pushing down her pain. “Mr. Griffith, I’m not saying this to make you feel guilty. I know you won’t, because in your eyes, everything my boss did was wrong. She never intended for you to know, but I couldn't stand by and watch her sacrifices be for nothing, to let someone else take the credit.”
Luna’s lips thinned, her cool gaze filled with a chilling light. “Sebastian, you owe her three lives. She gave you three chances, and you used them all up.”
Sebastian froze, his voice cracking with emotion. “Three lives? What do you mean?”
The words hit him like a lightning bolt. He had heard each one clearly, but their meaning was impossible to process. His heart hammered in his chest, a desperate need for the truth warring with a terrible suspicion that was spreading through him. His mind was a chaotic storm, and he could only stare at Luna, waiting.
