“That works!” Susan said. “The day after tomorrow it is. I’ll pick the restaurant. It’s been too long. Zenobia isn’t here, so it’ll just be the two of us.”
“Sounds good. I’ll see you then.”
After hanging up, Natalie lay down to sleep.
The next morning, Natalie got up early and had a seafood breakfast with her grandfather. She needed to prepare for her upcoming fashion show. This time, she had to succeed. She had let her career stagnate for five years.
“Natty,” her grandfather said, looking at her. “You look much better these past few days. You had a nice little trip. Where are you off to today? I’ve found a few new handsome young men. Want to come check them out with your grandpa tonight?”
Natalie choked. “Grandpa, it’s barely breakfast. Can we not talk about this right now?”
“And why not? Or are you actually interested in Matthew?” he asked, his eyes gleaming with excitement.
Natalie knew he must have seen the news yesterday. She hadn’t checked it again, but she trusted Matthew to handle it and to counter whatever smear campaign Jared had started.
“Grandpa, I need to finalize my divorce first. Only then can I even think about getting to know Mr. Monroe.”
Her grandfather nodded in understanding.
Once seated, the old man placed a file on the desk. “Sebastian, I’ll be brief. These are divorce papers. I expect you to sign them.”
Sebastian’s brow furrowed. The old man was here to force a divorce? He walked around the desk and sat opposite him. “Grandfather, they say it’s better to build a temple than to tear down a marriage. Why do you want Natalie and me to divorce?”
The old man nearly sputtered with rage. “Why? Because you’re not worthy of her! You belong with a girl like Joanna. My Natty stepped aside without a fuss to let you two be together. You should be grateful. If you dare to bully her again like you did before, I swear I will use every means at my disposal to drag both the Griffith and Scott families to hell.”
“If she hadn’t saved you from that fire when she was seventeen and fallen for you at first sight, I never would have let her marry you. She pulled you from the flames, and her entire back was burned. Do you have any idea how long she spent in the hospital? She was willing to die to save you! And when she recognized you at the Scott house, she agreed to the marriage. You survived that, only to get into another accident. She moved heaven and earth to save you, even forcing this old man to climb a snow-capped mountain to find a rare life-saving herb. She fought to save your life while you trampled all over her love. And now you’re dragging your feet on the divorce. What exactly are you trying to do?”
