"Natalie, you stray! How dare you call the police on me?" Nathan bellowed, completely losing his composure.
Natalie froze. Stray? What did he mean by that?
Smack! Wendy struck Nathan across the face. "You bastard, Nathan!"
Her hateful glare made Nathan flinch. "But… Wendy, she called the police on me…"
"You slandered her the moment you opened your mouth. Why shouldn't she call the police?" Wendy asked with a cold smile. "If you were so scared, why did you run your mouth in the first place?"
Nathan stared at her, a sudden realization dawning. Wendy had changed. When did it start? He looked at her with growing suspicion. Had she known all along? Was this all an act?
Wendy met his gaze with a mocking smile.
Nathan's heart pounded. If the police took him away from here tonight, his company would be ruined by morning. He turned to Natalie, his tone suddenly placating. "Natalie, I was just joking. Please, withdraw the complaint. I'll never say anything like that again."
Nathan was shameless and cunning, a true fox who could bend or bow as the situation required, completely devoid of pride.
"I'm sorry. What you consider a joke, I take seriously. If you're unfamiliar with the law, I'm sure the officers at the station will be happy to educate you on how to be a decent human being."
Natalie gave no ground. When it came to the Scotts, her capacity for mercy had run dry.
Wendy lowered her eyes and sighed. "Yes. He's already started forgetting things and talking nonsense." She pulled out a diagnostic report. "Look. I couldn't bear to show him the results. I love him so much, he's my whole world. That's why I got so angry earlier."
In reality, the only person Nathan had ever loved was himself.
Natalie watched Wendy's performance, momentarily stunned, unsure what her next move would be.
"Ah!"
A terrified scream echoed from the floor above.
