She had no intention of simply walking away. Under the watchful gaze of the receptionist, she returned to the lounge.
The receptionist didn't dare make things difficult for her—mostly because she couldn't quite figure out what Dominic's attitude toward Cynthia really was.
Cynthia was starving. After downing several glasses of water, she felt as if every tiny movement sent the liquid sloshing around inside her stomach, making an audible "thump-thump" that only she could hear.
It was utterly miserable.
Ever since VistaSphere Group had established itself in Cloudcrest City, she hadn't felt this humiliated or helpless.
A girl sitting in the same corner fished two dinner rolls out of her bag. After a moment's hesitation, she handed one to Cynthia.
"Here. Eat a little something, just to tide you over."
Cynthia started to politely refuse, but the girl shoved the roll into her hand before she could finish.
"Go on, eat. We've got a long road ahead."
"Thanks," Cynthia said, giving up on further protest.
She took a small bite, listening quietly as the people around her chatted.
The roll was dry and hard to swallow. As she chewed, she pictured Dominic sitting comfortably in his office, probably enjoying a plate of fragrant garlic ribs, while she was stuck here gnawing on stale bread. The unfairness of it all made her chest tighten.
He obviously didn't want to hire her at Holloway Enterprises—yet he'd still "stolen" her lunch order.
Infuriating. Absolutely infuriating.
She'd already cursed him a dozen times in her head, wishing he'd get food poisoning, but the anger didn't fade in the slightest.
Just as Cynthia was stewing in resentment with nowhere to vent, her phone vibrated in her bag. She pulled it out and glanced at the screen—a call from an unfamiliar number in Cloudcrest City.
She stared at the flashing digits, her eyes growing cold. Swiping to answer, she stood and walked out into the hall.
Benedict's agitated voice burst through the receiver.
