Maybe it was the disappointment written so plainly in her eyes that caught his attention; the man sitting across from her gave Cynthia a casual glance, as if he'd only just noticed her mood.
"So, what's this? Thinking of sneaking into the project team to pick up a few tricks?"
The question startled Cynthia. She quickly shook her head.
Of course, she'd considered it—learning from the project team would be smart—but she absolutely couldn't admit that aloud.
That sort of thing was practically a cardinal sin in the workplace.
"Mr. Holloway, why would you say that? With you right here guiding me, why would I need to sneak around learning from the project team? Just a few pointers from you are more than enough for me."
Dominic arched an eyebrow, scanning her up and down. Whatever irritation he'd been harboring seemed to ease a bit.
"At least you know what's good for you."
Cynthia managed an awkward laugh, playing along.
She'd learned a lot from her years skirting the edges of Cloudcrest City's corporate scene. All those skills she'd once used to flatter the city's officials translated surprisingly well to dealing with Dominic.
Dominic stood and left the lounge area, heading toward his desk.
Cynthia trailed after him, careful to keep her tone respectful. "Excuse me, Mr. Holloway… Where should I set up my temporary workspace?"
Dominic glanced at the small seating area across the room—a coffee table with a couple of armchairs.
Cynthia followed his gaze and froze. "Over there?"
Dominic's tone was dry. "What? Not up to your standards?"
She shook her head immediately. "Not at all. I'm honored to work in your office, Mr. Holloway."
He seemed satisfied with her answer and pressed the intercom, instructing someone to bring up the files for the Cloudcrest City project.
