Juliet watched from a short distance, her calm gaze following the scene. A former associate standing beside her couldn't help but ask quietly, "Miss Juliet, your sister and Mr. Holloway—are they…?"
She left the question hanging, studying Juliet's expression for any hint.
Usually so reserved, Juliet now wore a gentle, almost maternal smile, her eyes softening. She glanced in Cynthia and Dominic's direction and replied airily, "I really have no idea. They haven't told me anything."
Her denial did little to quell the growing speculation among the guests.
Juliet's lips curved with a trace of amusement. Everything was falling into place, perhaps even more smoothly than she'd hoped.
Jocelyn was there as the Fairchilds' representative, and being one of Cynthia's close friends, she was immediately surrounded by curious guests, all eager for gossip about Dominic and Cynthia. She'd intended to catch up with Cynthia herself, but seeing her inseparable from Dominic, Jocelyn decided not to intrude.
Despite the Fairchilds' efforts to shield her, Jocelyn had pieced together much of what was happening. With the Tremaines in trouble, their only path forward was to rely on Dominic's influence. If she could see that, Dominic certainly could, too.
What puzzled everyone, though, was how readily Dominic was playing along. For a man of his reputation, his cooperation was unexpected, making it all the more difficult to gauge his intentions.
Jocelyn could only laugh off the questions from the other ladies, dodging with polite small talk.
As the evening wore on, Juliet finally made a point of introducing Cynthia to the rest of the guests. After all, Cynthia had lived in the Capital for over a decade; she quickly recognized many of the faces and adapted gracefully to the attention.
Standing amidst the crowd, Juliet addressed Dominic with her usual composure, "Mr. Holloway, thank you for giving Cynthia this chance to prove herself. If she makes any mistakes at work, I hope you'll be patient with her."
Dominic said nothing, simply swirling the wine in his glass.
Juliet showed no trace of concern. In a gentle voice, she prompted Cynthia, "Cynthia, aren't you going to toast Mr. Holloway? Show your gratitude."
