A flicker of disbelief flashed in Cynthia's eyes; for a moment, she wondered if she'd heard wrong.
"Who was it? Was it… was it Dominic?"
She'd heard some rumors lately—something about Dominic getting engaged to Miranda.
Juliet scowled and rapped her knuckles lightly on Cynthia's head. "What's going on in that mind of yours? Why would I have any opinion about the man who's about to become my brother-in-law?"
Cynthia forced an awkward laugh. "Then who else could it be?"
Juliet shot her a flat look, as if continuing the conversation would be a waste of breath, then strode back to her room.
Cynthia hurried after her. Just as Juliet was about to shut the door, Cynthia squeezed her head through the gap, not caring if she got pinched.
"Juliet, just tell me—who is it?"
Juliet reached out and pushed Cynthia's stubborn, tousled head out of the doorway. "It doesn't matter anymore."
Cynthia watched, crestfallen, as the door closed in her face.
She realized there'd be no getting answers from her sister tonight, so she turned and rushed downstairs, heading straight for the housekeeper's quarters.
Camilla had just finished tidying up and was about to lie down when Cynthia burst in, breathless and urgent.
Startled, Camilla immediately perked up. "Is something wrong, Miss Cynthia? Is it Miss Juliet—"
Her concern for Juliet was obvious; she was already crossing the room, ready to head upstairs.
Cynthia quickly grabbed her arm and lowered her voice. "Camilla, has my sister ever dated anyone these past few years?"
Camilla paused, thinking back, then shook her head. "Not that I know of. Miss Juliet's been so busy managing Tremaine Holdings, I can't say for sure."
Cynthia pressed on, unwilling to give up. "Have you ever seen anyone drop her off at home?"
