Called Off the Wedding, Left Him Bankrupt novel Chapter 229

The car turned into the narrow lane where Cynthia lived.

It was a tucked-away little street, the kind where strangers could easily drive in and have a hard time finding their way out.

“You can let me off here, Mr. Holloway. I’ll walk the rest of the way—it gets tricky to turn around up ahead.” Cynthia reached for her seatbelt, ready to unfasten it, but Dominic drove straight into the lane anyway.

“You don’t trust my driving?” he asked with a hint of amusement.

Seeing he’d already committed, Cynthia realized there was no point arguing. She mustered a polite smile. “Of course I do.”

Dominic shot her a sideways glance, saying nothing more as he smoothly pulled up to the gate of her little courtyard.

“Thank you for taking the time to bring me home, Mr. Holloway. Just text me when you get back, so I know you’re safe,” Cynthia said, grabbing her briefcase and preparing to get out.

Dominic made a low sound of acknowledgment, then added, almost offhandedly, “I’ll be heading back to the Capital in a couple of days. Seymour’s engagement party.”

Cynthia’s hand paused on the door handle. She turned, meeting his eyes, and asked carefully, “Would you be willing to take me with you, Mr. Holloway? I promise I won’t let it interfere with your work.”

She knew Juliet would be at Seymour’s engagement party, and the thought of her sister facing that painful scene alone was unbearable.

The Raynes had moved to the Capital from the coast, but they’d kept their old traditions. Their invitations always listed every guest by name, along with immediate family members.

For years, Juliet had been the only one holding things together for the Tremaines.

Cynthia was well aware that her own name had long since faded from the Capital’s social circles. The Raynes’ invitation to the Tremaines hadn’t included her.

Her sister had already made it clear she wouldn’t bring her as a guest.
