When Cynthia put down her phone, she caught Dominic’s probing gaze. Her heartbeat skittered for no reason, and she couldn’t quite keep her expression natural.

“Jocelyn said she had something to take care of, so she left early. Let’s eat,” she said, trying to sound casual.

Dominic just nodded, unsurprised.

After dinner, Dominic gave her a ride back to The Tremaines’ estate.

He pulled up to the front gate. As Cynthia opened the door to step out, he caught her by the wrist.

“I’ll pick you up first thing tomorrow morning. We’re going to The Raynes together.”

Cynthia was about to refuse, but before she could say a word, he let go of her and added in a low, even tone, “Before you turn me down, just imagine what might happen if you end up on my bad side.”

She caught the threat in his words. Swallowing, she forced herself to nod. “Alright. See you in the morning.”

Dominic nodded again, the sternness in his eyes finally easing.

Cynthia climbed out of the car, closed the door, and turned back to him, her voice polite. “Thank you for driving me home, Mr. Holloway. Be safe on your way back.”

He looked at her, nodded, and before pressing the gas and speeding off, said lightly, “I think I’ve finally figured out why Tremaine Holdings ended up in such a mess.”

Cynthia took a step toward the car, anxiety flaring. “Why? What do you mean?”

Dominic glanced at her, a faint, mocking smile at the corner of his mouth. “I suppose it’s because all your brains were spent on getting a prettier face.”

With that, the car shot down the drive, leaving Cynthia in a cloud of exhaust.

She coughed and glared after him, absolutely fuming but powerless to do anything about it.

“Miss Cynthia, you’re back?” Camilla, the family’s housekeeper, called out from behind her.
