Called Off the Wedding, Left Him Bankrupt novel Chapter 42

Benedict took a deep breath, forcing himself to stay calm, and spoke gently.

"Cyndi, come on, don't be mad. Open the door."

There was no response from Cynthia.

He tried again, his voice soft and coaxing, hoping she'd give in.

But she remained silent on the other side.

Minutes ticked by, and Benedict's patience finally ran out.

"Are you not worried I might wake up Grandma?"

This time, Cynthia finally answered from inside.

"Go ahead and try."

In fact, she almost hoped her grandmother would be woken up by all this commotion.

Benedict was thoroughly annoyed, but he didn't dare raise his voice.

Cynthia's grandmother might seem fond of him, but she'd never take his side. If she got woken up, she'd only scold him for upsetting her precious granddaughter.

A few years back, he and Cynthia had fought over the family business and some issues with his mother, and things got so bad they nearly broke up.

Cynthia, furious, moved back here, and no matter how hard Benedict tried to patch things up, nothing worked. He had no choice but to turn to her grandmother for help.

But the sweet, gentle woman he'd always known had looked at him with a stony face that day and told him bluntly that Cynthia was just dating him—not married into the Shepards yet. If she wanted to break up, move out, or go anywhere, it was her business, not his.

She didn't try to reconcile them—in fact, she supported every decision Cynthia made.

In the end, Benedict had to back down. He let Cynthia call the shots at the company, and his mother, not wanting to cause more trouble, moved back to her hometown.

That night, Benedict stood outside Cynthia's bedroom for half an hour, speaking softly, trying to comfort her and coax her back.

But she didn't budge.

Eventually, he gave up and went to sleep on the living room couch.

The sofa was old and lumpy and barely big enough for him. In the middle of the night, it started to rain.
