The phone rang for a long time, but Theodore didn't answer Isabella's call.
Just as Isabella assumed that it was inconvenient for him to pick up and was about to end the call, a voice spoke up from the other end.
"Hello?"
It was a woman's voice, but it didn't belong to Emma. Her delicate tone sent alarm bells ringing in Isabella's head.
"Hello. Who is this?" the woman asked.
Isabella felt like laughing. She knew Theodore had her number saved as "Bella" in his phone, but this woman was now deliberately asking her who she was.
Just as she was about to speak, the woman continued on her own without giving her the chance. "I'm sorry, but Theodore is too busy to answer the phone right now. If you have any business with him, could you call back later?"
"I—"
Just as the first word left Isabella's mouth, the woman cut the line on her.
She was speechless. Something was definitely wrong here! Who exactly was that woman? Could she be the one Theodore had personally gone to pick up? How was she related to Theodore? Was she his ex? It was very likely!
For some reason, she suddenly felt a little emotional.
She and Theodore hadn't known each other for long, so she probably hadn't fallen in love with him. Moreover, they had come to an agreement from the beginning. As such, she didn't want to open her heart to him, lest she fall in love before the one-year period was up.
At that point, leaving would only be more painful.
After showering, she took out her tablet to look up information on dragons. She didn't allow her mind to wander. Theodore didn't return even after 1:00 am, so she had no choice but to turn off the lights and go to sleep.
Whoever that woman was, if Theodore didn't offer Isabella an explanation himself, she was going to pretend she knew nothing.
Still, she had a fitful sleep without Theodore by her side and woke up several times throughout the night. When she touched the area next to her, it was still cool, which meant Theodore hadn't returned.
Sometime early the next morning, she vaguely heard movement downstairs. She hadn't paid attention to it at first, since security was tight here and it was probably Theodore coming home. However, her ears soon perked up involuntarily.
It sounded like there was a conversation going on.
