Finnick Vinterberg’s smile faltered for a moment. He set his teacup down with a decisive thud, his tone laced with implication. “She went behind my back and had that child. I never accepted his existence. Sure, the boy might be mine, but if she thinks she can use him to threaten me, she’s sorely mistaken.”

Zoe blinked in surprise, forcing a strained smile. “That’s a bit harsh, don’t you think? I’ve watched you grow up, after all.”

Finnick dabbed the corner of his mouth with a napkin, letting out a derisive chuckle. “If you say so.” His expression shuttered. He stood up. “I have things to attend to, Ms. Donovan. I won’t be joining you for lunch.”

Once Finnick had left, the smile faded from Zoe’s lips as well.

Her phone rang. As she answered, the voice on the other end was curt. “I’m afraid I can’t help you with this anymore. The higher-ups are investigating everything. I’m not risking my career for this.”

Zoe’s brow furrowed, but she didn’t push. “Understood. I’ll find another way.”

The next day, after surgery, Tricia was moved to a private hospital room. As she began to drift out of anesthesia, she caught snatches of conversation outside her door.

Zoe spoke quietly with a plainclothes officer, finally securing ten minutes to observe Tricia. When Zoe entered, Tricia slowly opened her eyes.

Zoe settled into the visitor’s chair. Once the door closed behind the officer, she spoke. “Sorry I haven’t been in touch these past few days. My assistant has been taking my calls—she didn’t realize it was you, so she never told me.”

Tricia knew it was just another excuse, but she didn’t bother to call her out. Her gaze was cold, as if she’d long since given up on freedom. “So why are you here now?”

Lowering her voice, Zoe asked, “Are you really willing to quietly recover and then confess?”
