Zoe leaned in, lowering her voice. “I can’t get you out directly. But what if you had a psychiatric evaluation?”

Tricia’s eyes flicked up, meeting Zoe’s gaze.

After taking a step back and straightening her posture, Zoe continued, “I can help you—if you want it. The choice is yours.”

“There’s a catch, isn’t there?” Tricia eyed her warily. “You wouldn’t help me for nothing.”

A sly smile tugged at Zoe’s lips. “Of course there is.”

Evander drafted a document, fingers flying across the keyboard, when his phone buzzed with a call from Elliot. “What is it?”

“Hans has been asking for his mom nonstop lately. He hasn’t seen her in, what, at least six months?”

Evander’s fingers paused on the keyboard. Ever since he’d arranged for Hans to recuperate at the Howard estate, he’d hardly checked in on the boy. Especially after learning what Hans’s mother had done, Evander had kept his distance.

When the silence stretched, Elliot pressed on. “You were the one who insisted on bringing Hans into the Howard family in the first place. Now he’s separated from his mom and you’ve just washed your hands of it? He’s just a kid. No matter what she’s done, she’s still his mother.”

Evander finally asked, “How is he?”

“He eats well, drinks well, and has put on some weight. Honestly, I’m starting to doubt he’s even her kid. I’ve never met a mother who could let her child go malnourished while she herself had plenty.”

Elliot sighed. “Look, he is Tricia’s son. If you send him back to her, his life won’t get any better. But if you keep raising someone else’s child at your place, your wife might not be thrilled.”

Evander’s eyes narrowed as he stared at the screen. “I’ve already found someone willing to adopt him.”

“What?” Elliot was stunned. “Are you out of your mind? He still has a legal guardian—are you really going to put him up for adoption? Aren’t you worried Tricia will use this as leverage against you?”
