Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 423

Evander suddenly stopped in his tracks and glanced back to find her standing motionless behind him. His lips parted, the words deliberate and low, “Is something wrong?”

Charlotte drew her gaze away. “No, nothing. It’s not cold inside.”

She’d answered him, at least, and before he could say more, she slipped out the door.

Evander watched her silhouette disappear behind it. Only then did he unclench his fist at his side. Doubt gnawed at him—could he really just let her go?

The department dinner was held at a cozy, open-air bistro tucked behind a courtyard. The place operated more like a private kitchen—no walk-ins, just regulars.

Gentry, ever the social butterfly, happened to be old friends with the owner, which was how they’d landed the spot.

As Charlotte entered the courtyard, every eye at the table turned to her. She hesitated, scanning the group—aside from Gentry, she only recognized two or three faces. The rest must have been from other departments, and she instantly felt a touch awkward.

Gentry got up at once to greet her. “Dr. Sterling, you’re finally here! We’ve been waiting for you. Come on over!”

“Alright.” She made her way to an empty seat. One of the lab doctors eyed Gentry, teasing, “This is really your surgeon friend?”

Gentry raised an eyebrow. “What’s that supposed to mean? Don’t tell me you think surgery can’t have any attractive doctors?”

The other doctor scoffed. “What’s the point of all the pretty ones joining surgery? They’d be better off in our lab.”

“Oh, please. Let anyone work in your lab for a month and they’ll be pulling their hair out like stressed-out little gremlins.”

Laughter rippled around the table—they all seemed to know each other well; the conversation was easy, familiar.

“Here’s your barbecue,” the owner announced, setting down a platter of skewers. The woman’s voice sounded familiar to Charlotte, so she glanced up. Recognition flickered in the woman’s eyes.

“It’s you, isn’t it?” the owner exclaimed.

Charlotte blinked in surprise. “Dr. Hale?”

Gentry looked between them. “Marge, you know Dr. Sterling?”

Marge Hale straightened, grinning. “We’ve met! I didn’t realize you worked together.”
