Charlotte waited downstairs for a while before finally flagging down a cab. The driver turned to ask, “Where to?”
She hesitated for a few seconds. It was late, and she didn't want to bother Norene at this hour. Her only option was to return to her old place and see if things were still the same.
“Gardenia Apartments,” she said at last.
…
The next morning.
As Judd left his apartment, he was surprised to see two bags of trash sitting outside the Sterling family’s door.
He paused at their doorstep, hesitated for a moment, and then pressed the doorbell.
Charlotte answered soon after. She had clearly just woken up—her hair was tied up in a messy ponytail, a sleep mask still pushed up on her head, and she was wearing a loose, pale yellow nightgown.
It was the first time Judd had ever seen her like this.
She blinked away the last traces of sleep, instantly alert when she saw him. “Good morning, Professor Carstairs…”
“When did you get back?” he asked.
“Just… last night,” she replied.
Judd studied her for a moment, as if he’d already guessed what had happened, and frowned. “Did you two have a fight?”
She shook her head. “No, we didn’t.”
He narrowed his eyes but didn’t press further. “You’ve got a surgery scheduled today—don’t be late.”
Charlotte hurried to get ready and barely made it to the hospital on time. As she stepped out of the elevator, her phone rang; it was the property manager. He asked whether she’d be interested in renting out her unit in Building 10, since occupancy there had always been low. Aside from her and Judd, the other floors were vacant.
She was momentarily confused. “Why are you asking me?”
“Because Mr. Howard transferred the whole building to your name. You didn’t know?”
She stopped in her tracks, replying automatically while her mind went blank.
After hanging up, she scrolled through her contacts and found Evander’s number. She wanted to call and ask him about it, but the call wouldn’t go through—his phone was off.
He never turned his phone off.
It was obvious: he had blocked her.
