Despite her displeasure, Daphne knew her relationship with her son was already strained. If she pushed too hard, she risked driving an even deeper wedge between them. She took a deep breath and turned to Vickie. "Why would you provoke Charlotte for no reason?"
"I—" Vickie was at a loss for words. She had assumed Daphne disliked Charlotte and wouldn't mind if she caused a little trouble. She had even thought Daphne would protect her if Judd tried to intervene.
"Madam, I didn't provoke her! It was an accident!" Vickie pleaded, sensing that Daphne was not going to save her. She was truly panicking now. "I've been by your side for so long, and I've served this family faithfully. I had no reason to do such a thing!"
Daphne closed her eyes. Vickie had been with her since she started at the company, and she had always been obedient.
Judd's brow furrowed. "No reason?" he challenged. "Charlotte and I don't even work in the same office. What were you doing over there? Don't tell me it was a coincidence, because I can easily pull the security footage from the lab."
Vickie's shoulders slumped, and all the color drained from her face. She had hoped Daphne would put in a good word for her, but the look in her employer's eyes was now cold and complex. It was a look that screamed, *You are not worthy of my son.*
The guards escorted Vickie away, and the butler went to process her termination. Without another word, Judd turned and left.
Daphne sank onto the sofa. She couldn't tolerate one of her own staff having designs on her son. As much as she disliked Charlotte, she would never accept Vickie as a daughter-in-law. At least Charlotte was a Rayburn. Vickie, on the other hand, came from a common family with a tarnished history—her mother had even served time for fraud.
…
That evening, as Charlotte was about to unlock her front door, Judd's door opened. She turned as he walked toward her. Before she could react, he gently took her wrist, his eyes fixed on the red, blistered burn on the back of her hand.
"Professor Carstairs…" The burn stung, and she instinctively tried to pull her hand away.
Judd immediately loosened his grip, his touch becoming incredibly gentle. "Sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you. I've taken care of Vickie."
Charlotte was taken aback. "Taken care of her?"
