"Attorney Reed, I don't know where you're getting this nonsense," Lawyer Shepherd said, deciding to bluff, "but if you can't produce concrete proof, this stunt could seriously damage your reputation." She was betting that no one at the Justice Bureau would be foolish enough to risk their careers over this.
Unfazed by her aggressive tone, Attorney Reed remained calm. A moment later, a senior official from the Justice Bureau was called to the stand as a witness.
When Zoe saw his face, she shot up from her seat. Lawyer Shepherd finally realized what was happening, her composure crumbling into panic.
The judge addressed the witness. "Of the two reports on the screen, which one is authentic?"
The official, Miles, swallowed hard, his eyes flicking nervously toward Zoe. He took a deep breath. "The first one is fake."
"Miles!" Zoe cried out, trying to silence him.
A murmur went through the courtroom. "Order!" the judge boomed, banging his gavel. When the room fell silent, he instructed, "Witness, please continue."
Miles recounted the entire story of how the results were falsified, naming both Zoe and Lawyer Shepherd as co-conspirators. The two women's faces paled. Lawyer Shepherd had gambled her entire career to help Zoe, never imagining that Zoe could actually fail.
