Charlotte avoided his intense gaze. "In your dreams. Let go."
He chuckled softly and released her, straightening his collar as if nothing had happened. "Stay out of the Miss Lennox situation."
"She's my friend!"
"What can you possibly do when you have no power to stop this wedding?" he countered. "Are you planning to help her elope before the ceremony?"
Charlotte fell silent.
"The Vinterbergs won't harm her as long as the wedding is on track. If you convince the Lennoxes to back out now, you'll be putting her in even more danger." He smiled faintly. "I imagine you've already considered that, which is why you haven't said anything yet."
Charlotte pressed her lips together. He had seen right through her, anticipating outcomes she hadn't even considered. Frustrated, she turned away. "I'm going home."
Evander stood in the shadows, watching her leave.
…
The next day, Charlotte went to the prison to visit Tricia.
For the first time, Tricia appeared completely broken. The sentencing seemed to have stripped her of all her pride and sharp edges. She was a hollowed-out shell of her former self, her face a mask of utter despair. She only moved when a guard instructed her to pick up the phone.
"If you came here to gloat, then go ahead," she said, her voice raspy and devoid of emotion. "You've won."
"Are you sure I'm the one who defeated you?"
