"No." Amelia gently corrected them, "There are many cows and sheep on the farm, which can easily attract wolves and foxes. To protect these cows and sheep from being harmed, the farmers carry guns on their backs so that they can shoot to scare the predators away."
Amelia had wanted to say that if necessary, the farmer also would shoot to kill these beasts. However, she couldn't bring herself to say that as they were too young.
Andrew revelated, "I'll keep it in mind. Thank you, Aunt Amelia."
However, Ashley said expectantly, "Then, do we have a chance to see wolves and foxes? Oh my god! I've only seen them on the TV and in zoos! I've never seen wild ones! I want to see how they deal with preys bigger than themselves!"
Nora touched the tip of Ashley's nose and warned, "Don't get too excited. If they bite you, you'll cry your eyes out."
But instead of being frightened, Ashley retorted indignantly, "That won't happen! With Uncle Patrick and Andrew protecting me, they will be the ones to get bitten first! Uncle Patrick has so many muscles, so by the time the wolves take me away, they would have eaten their fill!"
Ashley made Amelia and Nora giggle. However, Andrew was responsible as he said, "Ashley, don't be afraid. I'll protect you!"
Ashley pinched his arm and shook her head. "No, I don't think so. You're too weak, and you don't have enough muscles even for those young wolves and foxes to fill their stomachs. How can you protect me then?"
"I... I'll use my fists!" claimed Andrew, brandishing his fists in the air.
"But..." Ashley was about to speak when Nora covered Ashely's mouth with her hand. She probably wanted to save Andrew some dignity and stopped Ashley to strike another blow at him.
"Andrew is the best!" Amelia was always supportive of the children.
Andrew brushed the tip of his nose in embarrassment and whispered, "I'll also protect Mommy and Auntie." As for Uncle Patrick, he was so strong that Andrew did not worry about him at all.
After a few minutes of walking, a two-story house came into view. Kaito had specially prepared this house for his guests to secure their absolute privacy and freedom. The room was decorated with earthy and coppery colours, while the floor was panelled with white oak, giving the house a vintage feel.
"Mr. Hopper, do you like it?" Kaito asked nervously.
Patrick looked at Amelia and saw her bright eyes scanning the house. She must like it here.
Hence, he turned to look at Kaito and said, "Mr. Kaito, this place looks tidy and beautiful. Thank you for your arrangement."
A cheerful look appeared on Kaito's face. "Oh! I knew you guys would like it here! By the way, you guys are from America, so you definitely won't be familiar with the food here. I've prepared fresh beef, mutton, chicken, as well as some vegetables and fruits in the fridge. I'm sure they won't disappoint you."
Patrick thanked him again.
Since Patrick and the group had just arrived not long ago, they needed time to settle down into the completely unfamiliar environment. So, Kaito retrieved the thought of introducing his farm to Patrick and instead began talking about some interesting topics to reduce the burden on the guests.
During this period, Akira and Hinata finally got the chance to face Andrew and Ashley, looking at each other in silence.
Both Akira and Hinata had black hair and dark eyes. The difference was that the brother, Akira, had curly hair, and the sister, Hinata, had straight hair. Furthermore, Hinata had faint freckles on her face, while Akira looked fair and clean.
After observing Andrew and Ashley, Hinata suddenly turned and said to her brother, "Akira, they look alike."
Andrew was good at school, excelling even in Japanese class. Moreover, the Japanese vocabulary he learned was comprehensive. So, he completely understood what Hinata had said.
"Because we're siblings." he replied.
Hinata looked at Andrew and asked, "Then why do I look different from my brother?"
If Ashley could understand what they said, she would probably say, "Because one of you was adopted". But Andrew was different, upright and never bluffing. "Because we're twins, so we look identical."
"Twins?" Hinata's dark eyes filled with confusion.
Andrew patiently explained, "Being twins means that we came out of our mother's belly together on the same day. Do you understand now?"
Hinata nodded vigorously. "Yes! I came out of my mommy's womb two years later than my brother. No wonder we look so different."
Andrew felt that Hinata's interpretation was wrong. And when he was about to explain, Ashley suddenly tugged on his clothes and asked, "Andrew, what are you guys talking about? Why don't I understand a single word?"
"It's your fault that you don't pay attention during Japanese class." Andrew mocked.
"I was focused in class! If you're talking about apple, cake, or candy in Japanese, I would've understood!" Ashley said confidently.
Apple.
Cake.
Candy.
Hearing her, Hinata exclaimed, "You're so cute!" At the same time, a bright grin appeared on Akira's face, as if he was responding to Ashley.
At this, Andrew finally eased up.
The four kids soon played together, but Andrew and Hinata often had to translate the conversation for Ashley and Akira.
After some time, Hinata said, " Andrew, Ashley, let's play outside. Uncle Martin has just given us two ponies. If you like, Akira and I can ride with you guys."
Ashley immediately became excited and chirped, "Andrew, we've never ridden a horse!"
"No," Andrew said. "We're still too young. We can't ride horses. It's dangerous."
"It's fine. Hinata said those are ponies, right? They must be about our height, so it won't hurt even if we fall down. Trust me!" Ashley was always confident when it came to playing.
Andrew still shook his head. "No, it's too dangerous. If they accidentally kicked us, we will die from pain."
"Andrew!" Ashley, who was playful at nature, could not help but cry out, "Aren't you a boy? You're a coward. You're not like Daddy at all!"
Andrew was unprovoked, only replying seriously, "If you want to play, then you must get Mommy, Uncle Patrick, and Aunt Amelia's permission."
Ashley instantly became listless. She was clear that the adults always supported Andrew, so it was useless even if she asked them.
"Then... I'll go and take a look, okay? I promise I won't ride it."
"Okay, I'll go with you." After Andrew said that, he told Hinata that he and Ashley were too young, so they did not want to ride the ponies for the time being and only wanted to watch.
Hinata nodded in understanding, holding Ashley's hand and led her out. Akira and Andrew followed them like two brave little knights.
Of course, the adults had been watching their every move. So, they were all impressed when they heard the conversation between Andrew, Ashley, and Hinata.
"Mr. Hopper, Andrew is so sensible. Not only does he know how to take care of her sister, but he's also considerate towards Akira's dignity." Kaito's wife had developed an excellent impression of Andrew, as, unlike other kids, Andrew did not whine with sympathy or ridicule when he found out Akira could not speak. In fact, Andrew was calm, as if being mute was not a big deal.
Patrick turned to look at Nora to find her proudly grinning. Hethen asked meaningfully, "It's actually not bad that he's a little adult. What do you think, Nora?"
