Amelia held her phone and giggled, "Don't worry, Uncle Quartley. I'm fine."
Ryan was assured and asked with shock. "What's going on, Amelia?"
Amelia did not conceal the truth, telling Ryan about Brittany's collusion with Kaleb. They retrieved her adoption certificate and blood type report from nowhere and wreaked havoc on Apex Construction Corporation. "So, Uncle Quartley, I've lived through the saddest days. Nothing can hurt me now."
Ryan had to admire Amelia's toughness. He then comforted her and expressed his yearning for her. Then, they ended the call.
Amelia then received phone calls from Jessica and Milton on the same day. Among the three, Milton was the most difficult to deal with, who had almost blown up Amelia's head.
"Amelia! I've always regarded you as my sister! My best friend! And you let me down like this? How dare you not tell me about getting married! That's a major event! And, is it true that you're not Uncle Ramsay and Aunt Petty's daughter?" At the end of his words, Milton's voice turned a little nervous.
"Eh? Aren't you in England? The news spread too fast." Amelia was amazed.
"It's a piece of cake for me to get onto the latest news. How many common friends do we share? Count them!" Milton replied with discontent.
Amelia then responded, "Tsk. The internet is so advanced nowadays. Maybe you even know that I'm in the toilet now."
"Amelia Ramsay! Stop beating around the bush! I'm asking you. Is the news true?" Milton repeated in ire.
Since he was so mad that he had begun to call her by her full name, Amelia quickly put on a serious expression and said, "It's true."
Milton was speechless.
Amelia waited but could only hear Milton's heavy breathing. When the expected uproar did not come, Amelia asked worriedly, "Hey. Are you still there?"
He remained silent.
After waiting for a while more, Amelia asked with disbelief, "Milton, are you crying?"
This time, Milton broke his silence. He uttered in a hoarse voice, "Who said that?"
"You're panting so hard, so you're either crying or masturbating," Amelia responded.
Milton was choked with anger and shouted in exasperation, "Of course I'm not doing that!"
"So you're crying?" Amelia asked.
"I'm not!" Milton denied.
"Okay, that's enough. You've always cared for me since we were young, so how can I not know?" Amelia rubbed the tip of her nose and iterated, "It's all in the past now..."
Milton grunted. "That's a weak consolation."
Amelia smiled bitterly and added, "What do you want me to do? Do you want me to cry all day long?"
Milton continued, maddened, "In the end, it's all Brittany's fault! I told you to watch out for her when she snatched Daniel! But you still fell for her trap!"
"How do you want me to guard against this news? Unless my parents or Aunt Alice had told me the truth beforehand, who would have thought that I'm not their biological daughter? Doesn't that sound crazy?"
Milton had no retort and could only ask, "I heard you're no longer the acting director of Apex Construction Corporation?"
Amelia brushed her nose and replied, "Right. Kaleb took me down." "No wonder you asked me to stop the advertisement plan. So that's why..." Milton snorted, and Amelia lowered her head in embarrassment as if Milton was standing in front of her.
Fortunately, Amelia knew how to admit her mistakes. "I apologize for making you worry about me, Milton."
Her sweet tone cooled Milton down. "Amelia, I'm not angry. I'm just worried about you..."
Finally, he said, "Take good care of yourself and wait for me to come back."
"Okay," Amelia answered gently. "Got it. You should take care in England too. Don't make me and Aunt Sierra worry about you. Call Aunt Sierra more often when you're free. Do you hear me?"
"I will."
Then, they hung up the call. Amelia buried her face between her arms with a faint smile on her face. There were so many people who cared about her, so what was there for her to complain about?
On the other hand, Brittany, the mastermind behind all of this, ended up defiled, threatened, and locked up. Amelia did not know what more was waiting for Brittany in the future, but she could not wait and find out.
On the other side.
Kaleb was on the verge of losing his mind. Ever since Fiona told him that Brittany was taken away by several men, Kaleb spiralled into a state of anxiety.
Milton hesitated before saying, "Maryanne, I'm going on a business trip."
Maryanne's eyes flickered as she crossed her arms in front of her chest. She tilted her head and asked, "Where are you going?"
Milton felt the same discomfort again, but he forced himself to answer, "New York."
"Oh, New York?" Maryanne scowled, but her expression relaxed in a second. "When are you leaving?"
"I won't know until I book the ticket online."
Maryanne nodded and suddenly added, "I haven't been to New York for such a long time. Why don't you book a ticket for me too? I'll go with you."
Milton was taken aback. "I'm going there for work."
"I know. I won't bother you to go shopping with me. Is that okay?" Maryanne blinked.
Under her watchful gaze, Milton felt regretful. He thought to himself, "Why didn't I tell her the truth? It'll be awkward if I tell her the truth now."
"I won't spend your money, okay?" Maryanne took another step back, causing Milton to feel even more embarrassed. They were a couple, so, if he could not fulfil his girlfriend's simple wish, he would not be a good boyfriend.
However, the worst part was that he did not actually intend to go to New York. He wanted to return to Northville. But if he changed his mind on the spot, would Maryanne think of him as a liar?
For some reason, Milton was beginning to pay attention to what Maryanne thought of him. He coughed lightly and placed the few sets of clothes on the bed, then pointed to a chair beside him while saying, "Maryanne, come over here. I have something to tell you."
"Okay." Maryanne entered the room and sat down. She held her face in her hands and watched Milton eagerly.
Milton confessed, "Here's the thing. Amelia has encountered some troubles. I'm worried, so I want to take a leave from the company and go back to Northville. I lied to you just now because I was afraid that you would overthink it."
As Milton spoke, he observed Maryanne's expression and realized that she did not look surprised. He was shocked, wondering if Maryanne had known what he was up to from the beginning.
After a moment of pause, Maryanne answered in a lukewarm tone, "Wouldn't it be all fine if you had told me this earlier? Why did you make up the lie? I'll be more suspicious of you if you continue acting like this."
Milton replied with shame, "I just don't want us to argue."
