Xander’s eyes were as deep as ever, his low laugh rolling out. “Well, this just got interesting.”
Yvonne had been rambling on about something, but Xander’s comment cut her off mid-sentence. “Huh? What’s interesting?”
He looked straight at her. “You really don’t have any feelings left for Dan?”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
Just the mention of Dan was enough to piss Yvonne off. Why should she have any feelings left for that loser? He’d burned all his bridges.
“What kind of nonsense are you trying to pull here?”
Xander smirked. “So the two of you are just… nonsense now?”
“Oh please, are you even listening to yourself?”
“Perfect!” Xander chuckled again, a glint of amusement in his eyes that didn’t match the tension in the air.
Yvonne just stared at him. Was this guy for real? She gave up trying to figure him out.
…
Meanwhile, Ronald had just finished walking Stella back from the medical center. She’d felt a bit off that morning, which wasn’t unusual—triplets meant extra caution about everything.
Dylan, their doctor, assured them all was normal. Everything checked out fine.
After Ronald got Stella settled in for a nap, he stepped out of the room—and his phone buzzed. Xander.
Ronald answered, not bothering to hide his annoyance. “What do you want?”
Xander picked up on his mood but just laughed. “I’m pretty sure I’ve already explained everything about our little princess. I mean, come on—I did save her life. That’s gotta count for something.”
“What are you after?”
Xander paused, then shrugged audibly. “Hey, I’m not asking for Princess Stella to come thank me in person. But she was supposed to be my fiancée, remember? You acted like you’d bite my head off for it.”
He sighed dramatically. “Does gratitude even mean anything to you people?”
Ronald’s silence was loaded, the tension practically crackling through the phone.
